My dog has kidney disease. Is her sudden diarrhea a concern?

It sounds like Nyla could have an eye infection, and that does not have anything to do with her kidney disease. It's best if you can get her into a vet now to get eye ointment to treat it, but if you can't, gently wipe away and discharge with a damp, soft cloth. Get her into a vet as soon as you can.

I am very sorry to hear that Bella is suffering from kidney disease. It is unlikely that the fluids she received caused her diarrhea and weakness. She probably would have had the diarrhea regardless of getting the fluids which is why she was feeling bad and not eating in the first place. The fluids actually were probably beneficial in helping her not become dehydrated from the diarrhea. Sometimes when the feces is very dark/black it can indicate a GI bleed. This is concerning to me because severe kidney failure can cause GI ulcerations and bleeding into the intestinal tract. I would recommend talking to your vet about Bella's diarrhea and bringing in a sample if you are able to. I'm sorry that your pup had diarrhea but I'm glad it resolved! Yes dehydration can cause abnormal kidney values. BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and creatinine can both be high in dogs who are dehydrated from non-kidney related illnesses, such as diarrhea (and vomiting). It's a good sign that her bloodwork is now normal. I hope this helps!

His further weight loss with decreasing muscle mass could be related to progression of kidney disease, or could be associated with other conditions such as hyperthyroidism, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, among others. Diarrhea is not commonly associated with kidney problems, however, and could be due to other gastrointestinal issues from diet changes, parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or other problems. Regardless, it sounds as though another trip to the vet is in order to recheck his kidney values on blood testing, as well as additional diagnostic testing to try to determine the cause of diarrhea. From there, your vet will be able to come up with the best treatment plan possible to help Puss maintain as good of a quality of life as possible. I hope this helps and that all goes well.

Hello, sorry to hear about Anya. Most GI sings of diarrhea may resolve with a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. However, other more severe causes of this such as liver or kidney disease, inflammation of the bowel, and ingestion of foreign material may will require that your veterinarian examine Anya. If she develops persistent vomiting or diarrhea then I would recommend having her evaluated by her primary care veterinarian as she may need bloodwork and x-rays to be prescribed the adequate medications. In the interim, monitor her for persistent vomiting (more than 3 episodes in 1 day), diarrhea with blood, severe lethargy, or loss of appetite and contact your veterinarian if you note any. Sometimes a kidney biopsy or ultrasound might show changes to the kidneys that are consistent with a problem present since birth, but other times it’s impossible to know what initially triggered chronic kidney disease. I’m concerned about the bloody stool and collapse - it sounds like Angel is in serious condition. I’d recommend taking her to a veterinarian if you’re able. Dehydration can be more serious for dogs with kidney disease and at the very least your vet your vet may want to give her some fluids.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. Sometimes cats in renal failure start to develop other issues concurrently, his guts are likely upset leading to diarrhoea. Depending on the cause the vet may be able to treat it with antibiotics and probiotics if an infection or inflammation is present. I think it certainly would be worth giving treatment a try for a few days. Unfortunately renal failure can be very hard on cats and you both have my utmost sympathy.
