My dog is shaking, limping, and staring blankly. Should I see a vet?

Based on what you are describing I would be very concerned that Scooter is having seizure-like episodes. I would recommend taking a video of the incident if possible and showing it to your veterinarian. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Harley! Look closely at Harley's eyes...are they moving quickly side to side or rolling? If they are then he could be having a vestibular event. The most common cause is a middle ear infection (under the ear drum) that causes inflammation of the peripheral nerve that control balance. Other causes could be more serious: stroke, seizure, brain tumor, metabolic issues or bleeding that is causing weakness. Harley should see your Vet ASAP this morning for an exam. Poor Harley does sound quite sick at the moment! It is concerning that he started to limp after taking a wee, and he could have injured, torn, or strained a ligament. If he's still limping now, two days after the initial time you saw him limp, I would take him back into the vet today. The vet can diagnose what is causing the limp and how best to treat it. In addition, the vet can follow up on how he is doing after having such bad diarrhea. Good luck, I hope he feels better soon!

It sounds to me like Harly is having neurological issues, probably originating from his brain. Unfortunately, the most common cause of these type of episodes in a dog Harley’s age is usually a tumor in the brain. If you are not getting the help you require from your regular veterinarian I would recommend going to see a veterinary neurologist. Hello, seizures are very scary, & in an elderly dog like Harley, it could mean some serious inflammation in the brain. Since he is so weak, I would really encourage you to take him to an emergency clinic for treatment. He may need some anti-inflammatory medication or anti-nausea medication to help with the drooling. A problem with his spine would explain the issues he has been having with both the front and hind legs. He could have a slipped disc. I would take him into a vet asap. The vet can diagnose what is causing his problem and can treat him. I would suspect the vet will want to do x-rays. I hope this helps!

Shaking or muscle tremors, difficulty walking and seizures can be a sign of neurologic disease in the brain. There are many infectious and inflammatory diseases that can cause signs like these. Severe liver disease or low blood sugar could also cause neurologic signs. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian if you have not already had Bobby examined. They can check blood work and may recommend testing for some infectious diseases. Often referral to a neurologist for an MRI and sampling spinal fluid is necessary to get a diagnosis, but there may be some treatments your veterinarian could recommend before more testing.
