Why is my senior dog having seizures, can't walk, and holds head back?

Poor Harley! In an old dog, I would be concerned that a seizure could be caused by low blood sugar, liver disease, kidney disease, or a brain tumor. I would take him into the vet today for an exam. It would be a very good idea to diagnose the cause of the seizure, and he may benefit from anti-seizure medications.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Harley! Look closely at Harley's eyes...are they moving quickly side to side or rolling? If they are then he could be having a vestibular event. The most common cause is a middle ear infection (under the ear drum) that causes inflammation of the peripheral nerve that control balance. Other causes could be more serious: stroke, seizure, brain tumor, metabolic issues or bleeding that is causing weakness. Harley should see your Vet ASAP this morning for an exam. Hello, seizures are very scary, & in an elderly dog like Harley, it could mean some serious inflammation in the brain. Since he is so weak, I would really encourage you to take him to an emergency clinic for treatment. He may need some anti-inflammatory medication or anti-nausea medication to help with the drooling. It is possible Harley may have suffered a seizure or even a head injury. I strongly recommend you video his behavior at home and arrange a full health check with your vet to identify any underlying illness or injury which may have contributed to these signs

A problem with his spine would explain the issues he has been having with both the front and hind legs. He could have a slipped disc. I would take him into a vet asap. The vet can diagnose what is causing his problem and can treat him. I would suspect the vet will want to do x-rays. I hope this helps!

She really does need some investigation into what is going on. If toxins can be ruled out and there hasn't been a traumatic injury to the head it is most likely going to be a central nervous system lesion. Unfortunately this is normally a brain tumour or similar. Epilepsy is still a possibility but rarely occurs in older dogs. I would recommend seeing your vet as soon as possible so they can start with some blood tests and take their investigations from there. Fingers crossed for you.

Sorry to hear about Munnu. The lab report you have attached does not provide any insight into the cause of his seizure activity. Unfortunately, a 12 year old dog with no previous history of seizures is most likely the result of a brain tumor or tumor elsewhere in the nervous system (this is of course in the absence of a known traumatic event to the head or neck). Other less likely causes would include certain infectious or inflammatory conditions, or extremely late onset epilepsy. I would recommend getting Munnu onto anticonvulsive drugs right away, and having his stabilized at your veterinarian if the seizures continue with regularity.
