Why is my dog shaking her head after sleeping? Is it a seizure?

She could be having a partial seizure or she may be experiencing pain somewhere. For example, an ear infection deep within the ear canal will be painful. If the episodes occur when Dawn is awake, then I would recommend having a veterinarian evaluate her. If she is having head tremors, it is important to determine if they are benign or seizure based (which can occur even if the rest of her body is not involved). I recommend that you have Buddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They are likely going to perform and examination to be followed by bloodwork which should help start sorting this out. A referral to a veterinary neurologist may be recommended. Good luck!

Head shaking doesn't indicate anything on its own. It could be that there is something irritating Orvia's ear or nose, itchy skin, a bug bite causing a reaction, neurologic or muscular issues, or more. If you are seeing other signs and symptoms in addition to the head shaking (loss of balance, nausea, confusion, etc), discharge from the ears or nose, or the head shaking doesn't resolve, having a vet take a look in person is best.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Poochie. If he is truly having a seizure, he should be unresponsive if you call his name or touch him. Most dogs will lose control of their urination and defecation. Some may drool or vomit during an episode as well. He should see his veterinarian to determine if this is the case or if something else is going on with him. It would be helpful to bring a video of a recent episode with you to your appointment. I would just keep an eye on him and if it should happen again take a note on how long does the shaking last, if he is salivating, passing urine or feaces, as this could be signs of a seizure. It' s important not to overstimulate him so let him come out of the seizure spontaneously, make sure he is not on an elevated surface and turn off lights and avoid loud noises.The seizure should last a couple of minutes and then stop. If it doesn't stop you should seek veterinary help. Hopefully it will not happen again, if it does appear to have another seizure make sure you offer some water and food once it' s over. There is a chance that Ted did not have a seizure but he was just twitching in his sleep .. so try not to worry too much ! If Ted should have seizures, he will need further investigations to understand what is causing them and remember that at no point he should have a seizures after another, if this should occur you should take him to see a vet asap. One off seizure is not an emergency though, and it' s normally contraindicated to rush them to a clinic as this could trigger more seizures. If you are worried and you are not sure about what s happening, call for advice/have him checked over.
