My puppy shook violently while sleeping. Is it a seizure? What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 3 months and 23 days old | 9.7 lbs

My puppy was sleeping and started shaking pretty violently, he didn't appear to actually be awake. We picked him up immediately to wake him up and he seemed a little weak for a a couple minutes and now is playing with a toy. he's never done this before, i'm worried he's not okay. what can i do tonight to help him ?

I would just keep an eye on him and if it should happen again take a note on how long does the shaking last, if he is salivating, passing urine or feaces, as this could be signs of a seizure. It' s important not to overstimulate him so let him come out of the seizure spontaneously, make sure he is not on an elevated surface and turn off lights and avoid loud noises.The seizure should last a couple of minutes and then stop. If it doesn't stop you should seek veterinary help. Hopefully it will not happen again, if it does appear to have another seizure make sure you offer some water and food once it' s over. There is a chance that Ted did not have a seizure but he was just twitching in his sleep .. so try not to worry too much ! If Ted should have seizures, he will need further investigations to understand what is causing them and remember that at no point he should have a seizures after another, if this should occur you should take him to see a vet asap. One off seizure is not an emergency though, and it' s normally contraindicated to rush them to a clinic as this could trigger more seizures. If you are worried and you are not sure about what s happening, call for advice/have him checked over.

    I'm not sure there is anything wrong with him, it could have been a dream or maybe he was a little cold, usually shaking is due to either pain, cold or fever but as he is playing and acting normally I do not believe it is one of those.

If he is otherwise normal I'm not concerned. He may be stressed from moving to a new home or dreaming. If it was a seizure you would notice him going from normal to having muscle spasms, then getting back to normal in a few minutes. It's a good idea to video the behavior and write down when it occurs so you have a history to discuss with your veterinarian should it get worse. I like to write down the episodes on a calendar so I can go back and check the frequency. Willis may stop this as he becomes settled in your house and as he gets older. If he appears agitated, weak or ill please take him right in for an exam. You may want to double check with his breeder to see if any other pups or the parents are doing this. Cavaliers do get heart disease, but usually when they are old, and purebred dogs can get epilepsy but seizures often don't start until they are six months to a year old. My dog shakes in his sleep. Is it normal, and should I wake him?
They can do this normally in their sleep and the fact that you were able to wake him up indicates that it was not a seizure. As long as he is otherwise acting normal when he is awake, this is not a concern. In the future, it's best not to wake them up when he is doing this in his sleep, because it can be very disorienting and disturbing for them to be woken up from this dream-like state. That sounds like Jb had a seizure. I would recommend taking him in. I like to do blood work including checking thyroid levels. I’m looking for treatable things. He also needs a thorough neurological exam to see if there are any deficits. I don’t usually place on anti-seizure medication for one seizure. I do recommend keeping a seizure log- keeping track of what they were doing, how long it lasted.. etc I have been using Royal Veterinary College App for my personal dog. My 2-month-old puppy twitches in sleep, hard to wake. Seizure?
Puppies can twitch in their sleep due to dreams they are having, so it may not be that Cali was having a seizure. Sometimes puppies can be a deep sleep and it can take longer to walk them, but I would keep an eye on her to be safe. Because I can't see her in person, I can't say for certain she didn't have a seizure, but you wouldn't have been able to wake her at all if she was having one. If you are very concerned, have her seen by a vet in the morning for a health check.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Jill. Some of the behaviors you are describing do sound similar to a seizure. Seizures can have a spectrum of severity, meaning that not all pets will have paddling like motions of their limbs or other typical signs of a seizure. More subtle jerking and shaking can be consistent with a seizure. Additionally, pets who are having a seizure are not mentally appropriate, meaning that they do not respond to stimuli (name calling, clapping, etc) like normal dogs. Seizures can have many causes. In a younger dog like Jill one possible cause is low blood sugar. I would recommend having Jill evaluated by a veterinarian so that she can be examined and further diagnostics (such as bloodwork) can be considered. If you are able to I would recommend trying to take a video of one of Jill's episodes. Additionally, until she is evaluated by a veterinarian I would recommend keeping a log of when these events occur and how long they last. Jill should be seen by a veterinarian immediately if these events last longer than 5 minutes, she has multiple events within 24 hours, or she does not normalize between events. Puppies do tend to sleep very deeply and they do dream more than adult dogs. I recommend to record one of these episodes. Start filing before you begin to stimulate her and then record the entire session until she is fully awake. Show it to her veterinarian. This will help to give a better idea of pathology or not. Some dogs will have focal seizures known as 'chewing gum' seizures where the mouth will tremble or they will make chewing motions. Usually dogs will act a little disoriented after a seizure like this, but some dogs don't. If you think he may be having seizures you should see a veterinarian right away. It might be helpful to video an episode to show your vet. Of course it's possible that this is just a behavioral tic too, but it's better to be safe and have a veterinarian examine Mega to make sure.
