My dog has head tremors while sleeping. Should I take her to the vet?

Hi there and than you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. The head tremors could be a form of seizures, pain, muscle related or idiopathic. Idiopathic head tremors is a condition that has been noted in several breeds but can occur in any breed. There is no known cause for the tremors and the disease is called idiopathic for this reason. I would monitor for now and if these tremors increase in frequency or intensity, I would recommend having Lacey examined by a veterinarian for further testing and to discuss the potential causes based on the physical examination. Dogs having a seizure are typically unaware and unresponsive to their surroundings and will not respond when you call their name or attempt to interact with them. They can experience repeated behavior (such as fly biting), or a grand mal seizure with paddling of the legs while laying on the floor. Head shaking while waking up or while walking do not sound consistent with seizure activity, although it cannot be definitively excluded. Head shaking is more commonly a result of ear discomfort in dogs, which can be caused by ear infections, inflammation within the ear, or ear mites. Since Bit Bit Fletcher is shaking her head so much, I recommend taking her to the vet for evaluation to determine the cause of this issue. If an infection is present, the vet will be able to evaluate any ear discharge under the microscope so that the most appropriate medication to treat her problem can be prescribed. I am sorry there is no video attached to this link. I would recommend taking Monty to the vet and showing them the videos. in some breeds like bull dogs they do get idiopathic head tremors (we are not sure why head tremors) that are non harmful and do not have a treatment. However in other breeds it could be a focal seizure and needs more attention. A vet visit would be the best place to start. I hope that helps

I recommend that you have Buddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They are likely going to perform and examination to be followed by bloodwork which should help start sorting this out. A referral to a veterinary neurologist may be recommended. Good luck!

Oh my. Poor guy. This sounds like muscle tremors and is a sign of a severe neurological abnormality that can be caused by a toxin ingestion, underlying brain/spinal cord tumor, or even an underlying metabolic imbalance (not as common). I would highly recommend taking KyCzar in to your vet to have him evaluated. Baseline bloodwork will likely be recommended and perhaps even a referral to a neurologist, if you wish to pursue further treatment and work-up. Unfortuantely there is not a good way to share videos using the free posting to the forum service. You will likely need to open up a private chat with an expert in order to share a video of your pet. But from the description, this sounds like potential muscle tremors or a neurological disorder for sure. I do hope that your fur baby is able to make a full and speedy recovery. This sounds like a neurological problem. It can be from and injury, epilepsy or an infection. You can put a video on YouTube and resend this question with the link. Also more of a description. Tell us if you are seeing this all the time or only certain times of the day. Your dog’s age and breed may help also. If this head shaking worsens then please take her in for an exam.
