My dog shakes in his sleep. Is it normal, and should I wake him?

I would just keep an eye on him and if it should happen again take a note on how long does the shaking last, if he is salivating, passing urine or feaces, as this could be signs of a seizure. It' s important not to overstimulate him so let him come out of the seizure spontaneously, make sure he is not on an elevated surface and turn off lights and avoid loud noises.The seizure should last a couple of minutes and then stop. If it doesn't stop you should seek veterinary help. Hopefully it will not happen again, if it does appear to have another seizure make sure you offer some water and food once it' s over. There is a chance that Ted did not have a seizure but he was just twitching in his sleep .. so try not to worry too much ! If Ted should have seizures, he will need further investigations to understand what is causing them and remember that at no point he should have a seizures after another, if this should occur you should take him to see a vet asap. One off seizure is not an emergency though, and it' s normally contraindicated to rush them to a clinic as this could trigger more seizures. If you are worried and you are not sure about what s happening, call for advice/have him checked over.

If he is otherwise normal I'm not concerned. He may be stressed from moving to a new home or dreaming. If it was a seizure you would notice him going from normal to having muscle spasms, then getting back to normal in a few minutes. It's a good idea to video the behavior and write down when it occurs so you have a history to discuss with your veterinarian should it get worse. I like to write down the episodes on a calendar so I can go back and check the frequency. Willis may stop this as he becomes settled in your house and as he gets older. If he appears agitated, weak or ill please take him right in for an exam. You may want to double check with his breeder to see if any other pups or the parents are doing this. Cavaliers do get heart disease, but usually when they are old, and purebred dogs can get epilepsy but seizures often don't start until they are six months to a year old. It is normal for dogs to go someone limp and have rapid eye movement while in deep sleep, just like with people. In some cases, you may see your dog whimper or even twitch their limbs if they are dreaming or deep in REM. If your pup seems in distress, or this happens often or when she isn't asleep, a vet checkup is always a good idea.

This is most likely her just dreaming. Some dogs are more active dreamers than others, just like humans. You can try benadryl about 30 minutes before you go to bed to see if it helps. Dogs having a seizure are typically unaware and unresponsive to their surroundings and will not respond when you call their name or attempt to interact with them. They can experience repeated behavior (such as fly biting), or a grand mal seizure with paddling of the legs while laying on the floor. Head shaking while waking up or while walking do not sound consistent with seizure activity, although it cannot be definitively excluded. Head shaking is more commonly a result of ear discomfort in dogs, which can be caused by ear infections, inflammation within the ear, or ear mites. Since Bit Bit Fletcher is shaking her head so much, I recommend taking her to the vet for evaluation to determine the cause of this issue. If an infection is present, the vet will be able to evaluate any ear discharge under the microscope so that the most appropriate medication to treat her problem can be prescribed. This all sounds like normal sleep behavior, and I would not be concerned. If Chutki is drooling when she is awake, then you might want to have a veterinarian look in her mouth and see if she has a problem with her teeth. Mouth pain can often cause drooling. Occassional twitches or movements while sleeping can be normal. If she is having no other problems and does not have twitching or seizurelife activity while she is awake, then I suspect it is normal sleep. Some dogs snore just as some people do.
