My dog shakes, twitches, and drools in sleep. Is this normal?

It is normal for dogs to go someone limp and have rapid eye movement while in deep sleep, just like with people. In some cases, you may see your dog whimper or even twitch their limbs if they are dreaming or deep in REM. If your pup seems in distress, or this happens often or when she isn't asleep, a vet checkup is always a good idea.

Occassional twitches or movements while sleeping can be normal. If she is having no other problems and does not have twitching or seizurelife activity while she is awake, then I suspect it is normal sleep. Some dogs snore just as some people do. If Browny is only doing this movement when he is sleeping, then it likely is in response to dreams that he is having. Dogs dream, and they can twitch and move their mouth while they are having their dreams. I've seen one of my dogs bark in her sleep and move her legs like she is chasing something. As for being wobbly, that could be can be an early sign of spinal cord disease, due to an ear infection, or a drop in blood glucose from not eating. I would monitor Browny for now, and if you do notice more episodes of him being wobbly, then I would have him seen by a vet for a health check.

If he is otherwise normal I'm not concerned. He may be stressed from moving to a new home or dreaming. If it was a seizure you would notice him going from normal to having muscle spasms, then getting back to normal in a few minutes. It's a good idea to video the behavior and write down when it occurs so you have a history to discuss with your veterinarian should it get worse. I like to write down the episodes on a calendar so I can go back and check the frequency. Willis may stop this as he becomes settled in your house and as he gets older. If he appears agitated, weak or ill please take him right in for an exam. You may want to double check with his breeder to see if any other pups or the parents are doing this. Cavaliers do get heart disease, but usually when they are old, and purebred dogs can get epilepsy but seizures often don't start until they are six months to a year old. They can do this normally in their sleep and the fact that you were able to wake him up indicates that it was not a seizure. As long as he is otherwise acting normal when he is awake, this is not a concern. In the future, it's best not to wake them up when he is doing this in his sleep, because it can be very disorienting and disturbing for them to be woken up from this dream-like state. His doesn't sound like anything to be concerned about. She is getting older so it is udnerstandsble that she may not rouse as easily as she once did in her younger years. Also the description of events suggest she was having very vivid dreams and the eye twitching is normal when a pet is asleep. This is an indication of REM sleep. Also pets are often limp when they are completely asleep. However if you still are concerned about Precious, then there are no issues with taking her in to your vet for a standard physical exam to ensure she is in healthy condition.

In many cases of dental disease, you will see an increase in drooling / salivation. The itchiness could be a separate condition and due to allergies, skin mites, fleas, etc. I would recommend having her scheduled for a general checkup with a veterinarian so that the mouth can be evaluated further and suggestions made for the itchiness. In the meantime, I would recommend a flea product such as Bravecto, Nexgard or Frontline and try this to see if it helps.
