Do dog seizures cause pain? Is my senior dog suffering?

I’m so sorry for your loss! Depending on the stage of kidney failure, symptoms can include nausea, lethargy, and sometimes pain. However, with appropriate hydration and care, the condition is not necessarily painful or uncomfortable. Seizures are typically not painful, but can be disorienting to a dog. This is a difficult question to answer, but generally a dog in discomfort will stop eating, become lethargic or may whine/pant excessively even at rest. Since the frequency of the seizures has increased, have Bandit examined by your veterinarian. There are medications that can be given to control them. Begin a Seizure Log. Note the time and duration of each seizure as well as information such as diet and activity before and after. This may help your vet pinpoint causes.

You will need Mozza to be examined by your veterinarian. If she already is on antiseizure medication, then she will need a blood test to check the medication level in her blood as, obviously it is not controlling the seizures. If she has not been seen by a vet yet or is not on antiseizure medication., then you should consult with your vet about putting her on such medication to stop or at least reduce the number of seizures. Looking at her age, she may also have a brain tumor causind seizures, but such medication can also curb the seizures for some time. Keep a diary of the seizures recording the trigger (such as the door bell ringing), time seizure started, time seizure ended, how the dog acts before and after the seizure and the date. If Mozza has a seizure that lasts 5 minutes or more you will need to immediately take her to the vet to stop the seizure. I hope you can get her to eat and drink sufficiently.

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry to hear what you and Patches are going through. Seizures can be caused by many things- as she is diabetic, checking her glucose was an excellent first step. Seizures can sometimes be caused by other organ dysfunction, such as kidney or liver disease. In her case, the sudden onset of so many seizures in an older pet makes me strongly suspicious of something serious, like a brain tumor. I would recommend euthanasia in her case. Seizures can be painful and disorienting, especially when they are uncontrolled. I'll be keeping you and Patches in my thoughts.

I am so sorry to hear about Rufus! It sounds like you made the right decision and had his best interest at heart. It isn't normal for older dogs to start having seizures and I agree the prognosis was probably not good. Just know that he is no longer suffering and you gave him a wonderful long life. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. I recommend that he see a veterinarian. He could have experienced a seizure and is taking a while to recover. If this is not the case, small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. This is a potentially serious situation as it can lead to weak or paralysis in certain cases. His veterinarian will be able to guide as far as treatment based on his exam findings. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

I'm so sorry to hear that Lilly has developed seizures. Seizures in dogs can be fatal if not treated. There are a huge number of newer anti-convulsant drugs that are much safer than some of the older ones (and even a new diet). I always tell people that old age is not a disease. Seizures and their side effects are much more likely to kill Lilly than any of the medications that your vet might prescribe. I think it is worth having your vet examine her and discuss the treatment options. Hopefully your vet can put your parents' minds at ease about the medication and make Lilly feel better.
