Do dog seizures cause pain? Is my senior dog suffering?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 14 years and 1 month old | 14 lbs

My dog is 14 years old and she has been having seizures off and on over the years and we have given her maple syrup and it helped the seizures but since Sat night she has had about 10 we are making the hardest decision of our lives to bring her to our local vet to not let her suffer anymore ....do these seizures give her pain and suffering

I'm sorry to hear that Mozza is having such severe seizures. While I do not think that seizures cause true pain, it sounds as though her quality of life is severely diminished. Recurrent or prolonged seizure activity can cause significant elevations in body temperature and subsequent brain damage. At this point, Mozza should see a vet immediately to evaluate her current neurologic status. Your vet will be able to discuss euthanasia or seizure management options, should you choose to pursue them. I'm sorry that you are all in this situation.
