Why do old dogs suddenly get severe seizures? Is euthanasia an option?

It's difficult for me to weigh-in on such a difficult decision without having all of the medical records available and being able to thoroughly discuss this with you. I can say that the decision to euthanize is extremely difficult and there is no right or wrong answer. I advise my clients to consider euthanasia when they feel like their pet is suffering so much that they don't seem themselves anymore; or just don't seem to enjoy life anymore. You will be the best judge of this. I would not expect that the dental treatment to improve the recent seizure activity, so if she already seems to be suffering, then I would reconsider the dental treatment. I think it would also be best to discuss this with your vet (if you haven't already), because they we be much more informed about her condition and prognosis. I hope that helps and all goes well.

It is not likely. I think you made the correct decision to have him humanely euthanized. I know it was a difficult decision for you to make and I'm very sorry you had to make it. I really believe you did what was best for him.

I am so sorry that happened. A seizure that lasts more than an hour can cause significant brain damage. If they could not get the seizures under control and they kept getting worse I do believe you did the right thing. We have the ability to relieve pets of their pain and suffering and we have the ability to help them pass without having to get to the worst parts of disease. Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. He, unfortunately, suffered a severe cardio-pulmonary event, either from the presence of heartworms, cancer, or severe cardiomyopathy. He was probably sicker than you realized, & also sicker longer than just the past 6 weeks. We all try to do the best we can for ourselves & our pets & sometimes we just run out of time to do anything. I know you feel bad, but you have to be honest with yourself & know that even if you had the money, he may have been too sick to do much for him. I am so sorry hear that Bobo had this issue. I can say that any animal that is having back to back seizures (especially at that young age) was likely born with a congenital issue either in the brain or the liver/kidneys. I think you putting him to sleep was a good decision. I cannot tell you if you he could have been "saved" or managed with medications as I do not have all the details but it sounds like his condition was pretty severe. If I were you I would not be second-guessing my decision. Without having all the details I think you did the right thing. So sorry for your loss :(

I'm sorry to hear that Mozza is having such severe seizures. While I do not think that seizures cause true pain, it sounds as though her quality of life is severely diminished. Recurrent or prolonged seizure activity can cause significant elevations in body temperature and subsequent brain damage. At this point, Mozza should see a vet immediately to evaluate her current neurologic status. Your vet will be able to discuss euthanasia or seizure management options, should you choose to pursue them. I'm sorry that you are all in this situation.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rocky, what a sweet looking guy! 1-2 seizures per day is consider cluster seizing and Rocky should be seen by a Vet. Unfortunately the start of seizure activity in a old dog is more likely a metabolic issue (liver or kidney disease) or a brain tumor but other causes like a low thyroid, tick borne diseases are also possible. Rocky at a minimum should be started on medications to stop the seizures. He could do well for a period of time. If you do not want to treat the seizures and they continue to happen at this frequency then I would consider humane euthanasia so he won't suffer or pass away during a seizure.
