My dog keeps having seizures after eating. Could her food be the cause?

That's a great question and one we do not have a lot of information to provide a definitive answer. It is actually uncommon for owners to report a pre-ictal phase. In the rare cases that do, typically it is head twitching lasting less than a minute prior to octal period. Now the post-ictal period can last from hours to days (up to 72 hours in my experience). In your pet's case, it may be that she has a prolonged post-ictal phase and then begins to seizure. If your pet began having seizures after the age of 7 years, then it is less likely she has idiopathic epilepsy or liver disease (though hepatic encephalopathy must be ruled out). Patients that have late onset seizures (>7y) are most likely to have intracranial disease such as an inflammatory condition or tumor. I would advise you to document the episodes and consult your veterinarian to discuss diagnostic tests and treatment.

Two seizures in a 24 hour period are considered "cluster seizures," which generally require anti-epileptic (anti-seizure) medications. The post-ictal (after seizure) period can last for many hours, or even a day, and can cause many subtle behavioral changes and could even affect Blue's appetite. At this point, Blue should be examined by her vet. The vet will perform a neurologic exam and full physical exam, and may recommend blood work. Based on these results, medications may be prescribed. Until you go to the vet, try tempting Blue with canned dog food, meat-based baby food, or boiled white meat chicken and rice. I hope that she's feeling better soon!

This depends slightly on the underlying condition - some dogs with liver disease do best on a specialised liver support diet such as royal canin hepatic or hills l/d. If epilepsy is the underlying cause, purina nc neurocare is showing some very promising results

It is important to have her examined and blood work assessed to look for a cause of the seizure of this is what she had. I suspect the main seizure disorder triggered more seizures. I would discuss with the veterinarian about starting Loki on anti-seizure medications to help stop the seizures from occurring. I would also consider a workup with a neurologist to discuss MRI / CT scan of Loki to help try and determine what the cause of the seizures could be. Yes excitement can induce seizures in pets that have a history of them. Inaccurate dosing or missed dosing of the anti-seizure medication while you were away may have also contributed. Inappropriate or reduced levels of the anti-seizure drug in the body can cause seizures. Lastly brain tumors and certain metabolic conditions can cause seizures to occur. Might be worth revisiting with your veterinarian regarding the seizure episode. They may recommend blood work check to make sure there is not metabolic problem and would be able to also measure the level of phenobarbital in Nikki's blood to make sure it is at a therapeutic level.

I would be very concerned with Izzy having this many seizures in such a short period of time. Young, small breed dogs can suffer from a condition called a shunt. With this disease the liver is unable to filter out toxins like it normally would. When this happens and the levels of certain enzymes get too high they affect the brain and cause seizures. This happens more frequently after a meal. I would recommend having Izzy checked out by your vet. They will likely run a blood test to check her liver enzymes and a test called bile acids to see how well the liver is working. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this in your young pup!
