My dog had seizures. Why won't she eat and what can I feed her?

I'm sorry that Layla is having seizures. Lethargy, stumbling, excessive sleepiness and decreased appetite can all be caused by seizure activity. The brain undergoes an enormous amount of electrical stimulation during a seizure and can take a while to recover. If by the morning she's not improving, I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian for evaluation. They may recommend blood work to look for possible underlying causes of the seizures. Depending on the frequency and severity of her seizures, they may also recommend that anti-seizure medications are started. I hope this helps and that Layla gets feeling better soon!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Angel. It is possible that she had a seizure based on your description. I recommend that she she sees a veterinarian. It is important to have her examined and blood work assessed to look for a cause of the seizure of this is what she had. She also may have an ear infection, but this is unlikely related to the suspected seizure. If she is acting normal again, you can feed her her normal diet. I hope this information helps!

I would try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice. If she still vomits, then there is likely an underlying cause that should be investigated through your vet. You can still give her her anti-seizure medication without a full meal, but definitely get her seen by your vet if she continues to vomit I hope that Nalah is able to get her medication soon and resolves her upset stomach. I'm going to assume that your question is what should you do about this, and I'm going to assume that this is a dog. Without knowing the cause of the seizures - i.e. Epilepsy, brain tumor, menigitis, etc - it's really difficult to know what could be going on. Most epileptics will continue to have seizures occasionally, even on anti-seizure meds. But what you're describing - lack of appetite, no water consumption, and not acting normally - are all signs of a possibly serious problem. So please take your dog to see a vet as soon as possible.

His lack of appetite may be linked to the seizure episodes or of course it could be due to many other things such as pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, among many other possibilities. It seems like his seizures are not completely controlled at the moment. It would be a good idea to let your veterinarian know as other seizure medications can be added to his anti-seizure medication protocol. Some of the diagnostics that can be considered to work up the lack of appetite is bloodwork and abdominal imaging, among other diagnostics. Good luck and have a good day! It is possible it may be food related - certain liver issues such as shunts can cause build up of chemicals in the blood causing seizures after food. This would need specific liver blood tests and possibly ultrasound to identify and if present can be managed with diet and medication for the most part although some may require surgery. Certain chemicals and molds in food can also trigger seizures

It is not uncommon to have 24 Hours of lethargy and “post-ictal” behavior especially after a cluster of seizures such as JJ experienced. However, it is also possible that he has something more concerning going on in his brain causing the seizures and lethargy such as encephalitis or cancer. If the behavior or seizure events continue then I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to discuss further diagnostics and possible anti seizure medication.
