My dog had a 1-hour seizure. Was putting her to sleep right?

I am so sorry hear that Bobo had this issue. I can say that any animal that is having back to back seizures (especially at that young age) was likely born with a congenital issue either in the brain or the liver/kidneys. I think you putting him to sleep was a good decision. I cannot tell you if you he could have been "saved" or managed with medications as I do not have all the details but it sounds like his condition was pretty severe. If I were you I would not be second-guessing my decision. Without having all the details I think you did the right thing. So sorry for your loss :(

I am so sorry to hear about Rufus! It sounds like you made the right decision and had his best interest at heart. It isn't normal for older dogs to start having seizures and I agree the prognosis was probably not good. Just know that he is no longer suffering and you gave him a wonderful long life. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. For any seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes, I get very concerned about irreversible neurologic damage. During a seizure, the brain tends to overheat due to misfiring of neurons. This can lead to neurological abnormalities related to brain damage from the excessive heat produced by the seizure. If a seizure lasts for an hour I would most certainly expect irreversible neurologic damage to ensue. I would seek immediate veterinary care if this were the case so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Oh no, poor Lou Lou! You will need to seek emergency veterinary care if her seizure lasts five minutes or longer. This is the point at which brain damage can occur, and she will need treatment right away to prevent that. I hope this helps!

It is not likely. I think you made the correct decision to have him humanely euthanized. I know it was a difficult decision for you to make and I'm very sorry you had to make it. I really believe you did what was best for him.

There could have been a primary infection that led to her untimely passing. She may have been suffering from a primary neurological condition or infection in her brain as well. It might be best to speak with the veterinarian that had been treating her to see what his / her thoughts were on what was going on so you can get some closure. Yes it could have been from a seizure or a bad dream. As long as Lola is normal now I would monitor her to see if this happens again. Dogs who have seizures more than once monthly or who have severe seizures should be put on anti seizure medication to prevent brain damage. Since you are not sure if this was a seizure I would write it on your calendar so if you see this again you know how long between episodes to share with your veterinarian. I do like to check blood work and do an exam before putting dogs on medication. Hopefully Lola just had a bad dream and this won't recur.
