How long should I wait before my dog gets its second parvo shot?

Vaccines require the immune system of the vaccinated patient to mount a response which may take a few weeks. By that time, parvovirus is unlikely to be in your pup's system. The best thing would be to separate them for at least 3 weeks until everything clears on your pup and make sure your German Shepherd does not have contact with your pup. Best of luck!

For his own safety and the safety of other dogs, it would be best to wait until he has received his complete first year round of vaccines including the second parvovirus vaccine which usually is given at around 4-5 months of age though that depends on when they received the first set of vaccines. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first two doses of parvo vaccine were given correctly but the third one was given way too late. It would be safer to give Mocha another dose of parvo vaccine, about 3-4 weeks after the one she just had. That will make sure that she is fully protected and she is not any danger for the new puppy.

Hi there. In general, it's recommended to give the second booster in 3-4 weeks because this is the optimal window of time for the immune system to respond appropriately. You can't wait too long, or the initial response will have completely died down and the booster won't be effective. It's generally okay to wait up to 6 weeks to give the booster if needed, but I wouldn't recommend waiting longer than that. Waiting until April 27th would likely be pushing it a bit, so I would try to get her in within the 6 week window if possible.

At this point, Abraxas isn't protected, and would need two vaccinations, 3-4 weeks apart to be protected. The best you can do is keep them completely separated and make sure to change clothes and wash hands if you go next door.

His next vaccines would typically be given 3-4 weeks later, so he's a little overdue. You should call your vet to schedule his next appointment right away. Hope this helps! Most adult dogs that were appropriately vaccinated against parvo as puppies - meaning 3 different vaccinations, given no earlier than 8 weeks of age and proceeding at 3 - 4 week intervals - are protected against contracting parvovirus, as long as they receive booster vaccinations as recommended. Typically, the recommendation is one vaccination on the one year anniversary of the last puppy vaccination, and then re-vaccination every 3 years after. Just one parvo vaccination is unlikely to be completely effective, but it may provide some protection, and if he contracts the disease it will likely be a milder form.
