My dog is scratching. Found a flea after Revolution meds. Should I worry?

Hi ! Can you still spot presence of fleas ? You should look for flea dirt more than adult fleas, tiny black dots that dissolve when put in contact with water on a white tissue . You can use a flea comb for this purpose and then wipe it on the wet tissue to see if there is any evidence of flea dirt. If you have established that there still are fleas, then it could be that when you applied the product it did not actually reach the skin surface. I would recommend to speak to your veterinarian with regards to an additional product to kill flea eggs and arrange an appointment perhaps with a technician to show you how to best administer this treatment, good luck and I hope everything goes well !

It would be expected for the fleas to be killed by the Pet Armor by now, but it would be worthwhile to wait a week before exploring other options. Revolution has a different medication and would be OK to apply at this time, but should be used cautiously in some dogs. There's always a possibility that he may be sensitive to the medication and it can be risky with dogs that are heartworm positive. For this reason, it's best to only use Revolution if prescribed by a veterinarian. It's possible that he may have a sensitivity to fleas, which can make the itching much worse. It's also possible that there is another problem like mange contributing to the itch, so it's best to have a vet evaluate him if this problem is not resolved soon. The vet may suggest another treatment, or provide medication to help relive his itchiness. I hope that helps and Tucker gets better soon.

In dogs, itching at the ears is a sign of an ear infection, but those can be caused by yeast or bacteria in addition to ear mites. There's no problem giving Bella the Revolution, as she needs protection from fleas, but have her seen by the vet for scratching at her ears to make sure this behavior isn't caused by bacteria or yeast. Yes, it certainly could be Parker is having a reaction to the Revolution. I'd have him seen by a vet asap to get this itching and wounds treated and to discuss another flea medication for him. An oral one may be better.

Unfortunately, if you are unable to take her in for diagnostic testing, the best thing you can do is use the drugs that were provided to you by your veterinarian already. Demodectic mites and/or fleas would definitely be the top differential for these symptoms in a pup of this age. Often multiple treatments with Revolution or a drug like it will be required to get the symptoms under control. Sometimes, even if the symptoms are resolves, continued treatment Revolution is recommended for another couple of rounds to make sure there are no residual mites still living on the body's surface. I would agree that a grain allergy at this age would be highly unusual but certainly not impossible. Hope this makes sense.

Hi and thanks for posting! Fleas are one very common cause of skin irritation in dogs and cats. Flea collars may or may not work well. Over the counter flea treatments may not work very well either as they contain ingredients in them that have been around for many years and fleas have built up a resistance to them. Another common cause of skin irritation are allergies. Seasonal allergies are common. Sometimes seasonal allergies can be controlled with anti-histamines and certain other medications from Mia's veterinarian that help alleviate symptoms. Looks like Mia's skin is red and does looks infected. She may need antibiotics from Mia's vet to help resolve.

If you have a flea infestation in your house or yard it will be harder for the Revolution to be fully effective. Make sure you vacuum regularly, and treat the other pets in the household as well as the yard if that is practical. I use a flea comb dipped in soapy water to catch the fleas on Dexter. You’ll find that the fleas are slower than normal because they are dying. If you are consistent with your flea control in the house, other pets, and yard and use Revolution monthly as directed the fleas should all be gone in several weeks.
