My 3-month puppy scratches, bites, has bald spots. Mites or allergy?

Hi there. Has your veterinarian performed a skin scraping looking for mites yet? Many types of mites can be really difficult to find. I will occasionally still treat a dog for mites even if I can’t prove that they are there. That would be my recommendation moving forward. If she is really just 4 months old then skin allergies are much less likely, although not impossible I treat all of my itchy puppies like mites until proven otherwise. I hope this is helpful! First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Mites and allergies are usually the top offenders for itching and hair falling out. If Snowball has not been checked for mites, then I would be surprised, because we (vets) usually want to rule this out as a cause for itching, before treating for allergies (especially food allergies, which are a more rare cause of allergies). A vet can check for mites bay scraping the skin and looking for the mites under the microscope. This requires about 10 minutes to do at a veterinary clinic. I definitely recommend consulting your vet about this, if it hasn't been done before. I hope that helps and Snowball gets better soon.

The only way to definitively diagnose mange (Demodex) is by skin scrapings which should be repeated every 2-3 weeks during treatment until 2 negative skin scrapings are found. Make sure that the flea and tick medication prescribed will also treat mites (milbemycin or moxidectin) and keep in mind that the dosage frequency is different for mite treatment than it is for flea preventative. Treatment needs to continue for 1-2 months after there is a negative skin scraping. Steroids are usually contraindicated in treatment of Demodex. Demodex mites are not contagious to other animals so your other dogs may not be affected.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for also adding photos. Since I can’t see Prince McArthur up close I can’t for sure but it is possible he has microscopic mites. These mites are not itchy and not contagious but can cause hair loss especially in young puppies. I recommend taking him to a vet so they can look with a microscope and get him treatment if necessary. Good luck and kisses to Prince McArthur!

Poor girl. With so many external skin parasites on her then hair loss due is common to occur. There is no harm in waiting 1-2 weeks to see if the hair starts to grow back on its own. As long as she isn't chewing her paws excessively and seems bothered then it's ok to wait things out for now. Also try an oatmeal based puppy shampoo to hear her skin. When she is at least 6 weeks of age then visit your vet to get her on topical Revolution to protect her from future infestations. Monitor her behavior as well and if she acts ill in the next few days then it's best to get her seen to make sure she didn't pick up a big from the many parasites she had on her.
