My dog's eye is scratched and painful. How to soothe it until the vet?

Ouch! This looks pretty irritated now. Ada could be having an allergic reaction to something, have chronic allergies that are starting for the season, or even have an issue with her immune system. I would recommend putting and e-collar (cone) on her tonight so that she can't rub her face and damage her eye and schedule an appointment for tomorrow with her regular vet. If she can't get comfortable this evening, or you don't have an e-collar, err on the side of caution and take her to an emergency clinic. Watch Egie for any signs that the eye itself was injured such as squinting, redness to the sclera or excessive tearing. As long as the injury is only on the skin, your pup can probably heal on his own. If the eye itself is injured, havehim examined quickly. Have him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Until the wound is healed, no more play dates. I am not familiar with Leucillin but as long as it is safe for the eyes, you can apply the ointment for the next 1- 2 days then stop. I'm very concerned that he is scratching his eye, and he could really damage it with his claws. I also see in the pictures that he's holding his eye closed, which suggests his eye is painful. I would not put anything in his eye without having him seen by a vet. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into a vet immediately. The concern is if has an eye infection, corneal ulcer, or foreign body in the eye which can be very painful and irritating. It is best if Poppy gets seen and treated at his veterinarian soon for this. If not, the issue could get worse and progressively more irritating and potentially damaging to the eye. Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about Rufus' troubles. I'd definitely use some warm water and gently flush the eye the best you can. You can also use a cold compress to help with the swelling. Just gently apply it over the eye for 5 minutes at a time. I know you mentioned there aren't funds for a vet visit right now, but this honestly is what Rufus needs. His eye should be appropriately evaluated by a vet. There could be damage to the eye or a scratch or puncture that needs medication to heal. Rufus should also have some pain medications prescribed. A lot of veterinary practices will take care credit for payment. If that's something you can manage, it may be a good idea. For now, do your best to keep Rufus comfortable and keep the eye clean by gently flushing 2-3 times per day. I have sometimes recommended vetericyn ophthalmic solution for cleaning around the eye as well. You can find that on Amazon. A plastic cone or e-collar would be a good idea too so that Rufus can't scratch or rub at his eye. Best of luck!

Eyes are very delicate organs. If there is an injury it is always best to have your vet check it. Eye injuries can go from bad to worse quickly and then you risk losing vision and/or the eye itself. I have not seen the eye so it's hard to give advice. It is up to you though what you want to do. If you want to try something at home you can try this eye gel. If no improvement after a couple days of treatment then he needs to see the vet. I would use it 3-4 times per day. It could get into his eye, and hurt him. You can use some cool water to clean the area, and then have him seen by a vet in the morning. He needs to have his eye checked to be sure there isn't damage to the cornea, and the vet can treat the scratch. Best of luck, I hope this helps,
