My dog scratched her eye and has a scab. Is Polysporin safe to use?

My dog scratches around her eye and a scab has formed. Is it safe to apply a topical like Polysporin?

No, I would not use this on Mila. This could get into her eyes, which would not be safe. In addition, she may just rub it off with her paw and then ingest it, which is also not safe. It's important to treat the reason behind why she is scratching around her eye, which could be due to allergies, a foreign body, or an eye infection. If the cause if the scratching isn't treated, she will keep doing it and make the scab worse. In addition, by scratching around her eye, she may have accidentally scratched her cornea, and her eye should be examined for damage. I would take her into a vet now. The vet can determine what is causing her to scratch her eye, and can treat it.

Hello, sorry to hear about Luca. Ideally you should not used any medications on the eye that are not prescribed by your veterinarian. That is because certain medications can make some conditions worse or not help at all. There are versions of Polisporin that contain steroids, which would make any eye ulcer worse. Therefore, I would recommend that Luca is seen by a veterinarian before you apply anything into the eye. You may wipe the mucus with a soft damp towel. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi, it depends on the scratch, what caused it and how deep it is.In general a vet check up is the best way forward as if the scratched was caused by another dog or cat, might need antibiotics. If the scratch is superficial, will not necessarily need antibiotics. We normally would clean with some saline ( sterile saline fluid ). Hope this makes sense ! All the best

This looks like a fairly small, superficial abrasion so I think it would probably okay to continue to monitor it. If MK is licking the area I wouldn't recommend using Polysporin. If the wound seems to be getting larger or you notice an increase in redness, swelling or discharge you should have your vet examine it.

Eyes are very delicate organs. If there is an injury it is always best to have your vet check it. Eye injuries can go from bad to worse quickly and then you risk losing vision and/or the eye itself. Red eyes with discharge in dogs can be due to a variety of reasons, including allergies, an eye infection, a scratched cornea, dry eye, or another underlying issue. While antibiotic drops may help with some of these, they may not fix it depending on what the cause is. I would recommend Eddie be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his eye issue, have any necessary testing done (eye stain, pressure check, tear production check) and what medications (if any) he may need. Dog eye scratch from play: When to see a vet and what to do?

Watch Egie for any signs that the eye itself was injured such as squinting, redness to the sclera or excessive tearing. As long as the injury is only on the skin, your pup can probably heal on his own. If the eye itself is injured, havehim examined quickly. Have him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Until the wound is healed, no more play dates. I am not familiar with Leucillin but as long as it is safe for the eyes, you can apply the ointment for the next 1- 2 days then stop.
