Poodle has scabs on neck/back after grooming. Clipper burn or serious?

Poor boy, this looks very sore! As long as he appears to be well in himself- drinking and eating normally-I think this is down to his sore skin rather than the vaccinations. It looks like he has developed quite bad clipper rash from being clipped short in these areas. You can try gently bathing the areas in warm salty water, then pat them dry and apply a topical wound cream with hydrocortisone and antibiotic in it. I would do this twice a day. You could also give an antihistamine tablet to help with the itch. This does look pretty bad so if the wee pet is in a lot of discomfort or it looks like the skin is getting worse take him in to the vet. He may need some painkillers and oral antibiotics. Poor Kaisa! These look like serious bacteria or fungal infections. I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to properly clean that area. Your vet may want to do a biopsy of the area to send in for a histopath and possible bacterial and fungal cultures. Your vet may also talk to you about trying medicine first but if it isn’t improving I would strongly encourage a biopsy to get a definitive diagnosis. I hope this helps!

You’re right that it can be hard to tell if the cuts came first or after the licking started. It’s possible that the skin was irritated (we call it clipper burn) after grooming, and since dogs lick areas that are uncomfortable, it makes the whole situation worse. The best thing to do is to prevent Pepper from licking anymore. He can wear an e-collar/come for a few days. If the skin isn’t looking better 24 hours after wearing the cone, it may need medications so Pepper should get checked out by his vet.

It looks like a bacterial infection, maybe starting in a little spot of clipper burn, there's no way to be sure. I would clean the area with some mild soap and warm water, don't scrub too hard but try to soften and remove the crusty material, being sure to remove any trace of the soap afterward so it doesn't remain on the skin and irritate it further. Do this morning and night and if the area does not significantly improve in the next few days or gets worse, get him in to see your vet for an exam

Poor pup. This looks like a hot spot. This is a superficial bacterial infection that is initially caused by some kind of trauma/injury to the skin that then gets infected. You will need to have this area shaved by your vet and then get Biscuit on antiboitics to get this to heal. I would recommend scheduling an appt with your vet soon to have this taken care of. Until you can get Biscuit seen, you can certainly clean this area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with water to help reduce the bacterial load there and keep the infection down until he can get seen by your vet. This could be a focal area of a bacterial infection, a possible insect bite wound, or an open sore that just got infected. You need to keep this area clean and dry and prevent Candy from rubbing or pawing at it. I recommend your veterinarian do an exam as this looks like it will likely need antibiotics and possibly a prescription strength topical medication to heal.

These scabs could be due to itching from something such as fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, I can give you one for him. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment.
