My dog is itching and biting after grooming. Are these clipper burns?

Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent further licking or chewing. Sometimes, there can be some clipper burn after a grooming which can cause some irritation. The image attach shows what appears to be a small mass or lump. To determine what it is, you will need to have Pepper physically examined by your veterinarian. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. In the meantime, the cone may be enough to allow for healing. Your vet can dispense antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatories if indicated.

Hi Julie! Poor Perry - he certainly did remove a good bit of hair from that area. Since all of this chewing and itching started after his grooming, I have to wonder if he isn't allergic to the shampoo or other grooming products that were used. Some dogs can also develop a folliculitis, or inflammation at the hair follicle, after grooming, but this typically causes some redness on the skin. It's also possible that the timing is coincidental and that this problem is associated with underlying allergies or other medical conditions. As a starting point, try to give Perry a bath with a gentle hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo or baby shampoo to try to remove any residue that may remain from the other products. If he's still licking and chewing a few days after the bath, it would be best to have him evaluated by his vet. The vet will be able to examine his skin, perform any necessary testing, and may need to prescribe some topical or oral medication to help manage his itching/chewing. Even though this doesn't sound like a classic flea problem (and you aren't seeing fleas), it's still important to keep Perry on flea prevention consistently to be sure that fleas aren't contributing to the problem. It looks like a bacterial infection, maybe starting in a little spot of clipper burn, there's no way to be sure. I would clean the area with some mild soap and warm water, don't scrub too hard but try to soften and remove the crusty material, being sure to remove any trace of the soap afterward so it doesn't remain on the skin and irritate it further. Do this morning and night and if the area does not significantly improve in the next few days or gets worse, get him in to see your vet for an exam

Poor guy. It does look like these are scabs due to possible trauma to the skin. If the groomer didn't notice these during the groom, we have to assume they were caused at the groomer. I would have your vet take a look at these areas closely as they likely will need a short course of antibiotics to fully resolve. Poor Benji! This can sometimes happen after grooming, if there is some skin irritation in these areas caused by the clippers. You can try applying some topical hydrocortisone spray to the irritated areas every 8-12 hours for the next few days to help give him some relief - you should be able to find a spray labeled for use in dogs at most pet stores. I would also recommend mentioning to the groomer next time that he had this issue - that way, they can be extra careful not to give him any "clipper burn" in these sensitive areas in the future :)

It can be a reaction to the sprays or shampoos they use or it could have been there and the clippers irritated it and made it a little worse. It does appear to be a little infection from the skin peeling back around the edges. It is best to get Ollie treated by a vet but nothing that is am emergency
