Why is my dog's belly irritated with a scab after grooming?

Some possibilities include: urine scald (basically an extreme diaper rash), skin infection, allergies/hot spots, tick/flea bites, insect bite hypersensitivity, and more. If it looks serious (painful, infected, or very itchy), he should see a vet right away to get on medication to control itching or infection. If it looks only mildly uncomfortable, try an E-collar to prevent licking. Keep him from lying in his urine/feces and keep him clean and dry as much as possible. You’re right that it can be hard to tell if the cuts came first or after the licking started. It’s possible that the skin was irritated (we call it clipper burn) after grooming, and since dogs lick areas that are uncomfortable, it makes the whole situation worse. The best thing to do is to prevent Pepper from licking anymore. He can wear an e-collar/come for a few days. If the skin isn’t looking better 24 hours after wearing the cone, it may need medications so Pepper should get checked out by his vet.

This looks like it is most likely an infection in the skin. It is very common to start out red and crusty like this. The black spots are usually a reaction to irritation and the skin gets more pigment. Most of the time, infections in the skin are secondary to allergies or anything else that causes inflammation in the skin. I would recommend an evaluation by a veterinarian and a skin scraping. The skin scraping will look for mites, yeast and bacteria. This way, the veterinarian can choose the right type of treatment. Often, these infections need to be treated with oral medication. Poor guy. It does look like these are scabs due to possible trauma to the skin. If the groomer didn't notice these during the groom, we have to assume they were caused at the groomer. I would have your vet take a look at these areas closely as they likely will need a short course of antibiotics to fully resolve. There is also "hot spot" spray available at your local pet store that MAY resolve this skin infection as an alternative. I hope that Cookie's skin heals up well soon! Best of luck and take care.

Based on the photos, it appears as though Galbi may have a bacterial skin infection. This could also be the start of what we call seborrheic dermatitis. I would use the shampoo and spray as I had previously recommended (Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combo and the Malacetic conditioning spray, both of which can be found online quite easily). If there is no improvement or it worsens, then I would still recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Galbi for further treatment recommendations.

This could be a skin condition called acanthosis nigricans. It may also be due to chronic inflammation or infection. The only way to diagnose the underlying cause is to have Scruffy physically examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary dermatologist. Sometimes, a skin biopsy is required. Family or friends can also be asked to assist you financially. There is nothing OTC that can be used to resolve the conditions. You would only be guessing without a diagnosis. Poor Kaisa! These look like serious bacteria or fungal infections. I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to properly clean that area. Your vet may want to do a biopsy of the area to send in for a histopath and possible bacterial and fungal cultures. Your vet may also talk to you about trying medicine first but if it isn’t improving I would strongly encourage a biopsy to get a definitive diagnosis. I hope this helps!
