My dog is sad after vacation, misses dog friend. How to cheer him up?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 65 lbs

We just came back from vacation (a month long one) and Lucas was staying with a family friend and his dog. Now that he's back home he seems excited to be back with us, but at the same time he looks sad. I think he misses the other dog he played with. What can I do to brighten his day or make him happier? I really don't like seeing him so sad/depressed.

I am sorry to hear that it seems Lucas is not himself. It is most likely that he is only experiencing an adjustment period following your separation and now return. I would advise the following to try and help him feel more secure and therefore help him return to being himself;

Extra walks or exercise
Soiclaiziation with other dogs at a dog park
Special dinner such as cooked carrots and boiled chicken breast added to his normal food
Interactive game time like hide and seek or fetch
Extra cuddles and affection
Positive reinforcement when he seeks out interaction with you

If Lucas is still not acting himself in a a weeks time, vomits or has diarrhoea, loses his appetite, seems I. Pain or depressed I would consider a trip to the veterinarian to make sure there aren't any underlying causes to his behaviour change.

Wishing you both the best of luck.

    HI, some dogs really enjoy the company of other dogs. Try finding another dog you can make a play date with. Or you can take him to a dog park. Exercise is essential, so taking him for a walk and playing with him will brighten his day as well. He will adjust to being a single dog in a few days, just make sure he gets social time with other dogs. Good luck, I hope this helps!
