Why is my dog suddenly scared of kitchen and cookies after vacation?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 49 lbs

My dog is acting weird since I came back from a week vacation. He stayed with my friends and was real happy to see me when I returned. The strange thing he is doing now is he is afraid of my kitchen and when I ask him if he wants a cookie he runs on my couch and cowers down in fear. Cookies use always be a positive thing for him and now it seems to be a negative. I confronted my friends nicely but the wife got real hostile with me and said "I didn't do anything to your dog "!

That's a difficult situation! It could be the two changes in environment is a little stressful for him, and he may need a few more days to settle back into his normal routine. Dogs can get stressed when they leave home for a bit, stay in a new place, and then are returned to their normal home. I would give him a few more days to see if he returns to normal, and if he doesn't, I would take him into the vet for an exam. Sometimes, a medical illness such as an infection or injury can cause a dog to act differently from normal, and it would be good to rule that out if he's not back to himself in another couple of days.
