My dog has a runny nose, sneezes, and itches. What OTC allergy meds?

Handsome boy! He may have allergies from spring pollen or a mild cold. You can give Benadryl to reduce the nasal discharge and itching. There is a section on this website with information and dosages of common over the counter medications that are safe for dogs. if he stops eating, the discharge gets green or he's very lethargic then I would recommend a veterinary exam. These symptoms do sound likely that Nino has allergies. If it has been going on for weeks and is getting worse, he likely has seasonal/environmental allergies. Unfortunately over the counter allergy meds such as Benadryl don't work all that well, and he really needs something more effective to control his symptoms, which would need to come from a vet. The pimples you are seeing probably indicate a secondary skin infection which will need antibiotics to clear up. So, he will need a vet visit to improve. In the meantime you can keep those areas clean and dry; I recommend bathing him with a mild oatmeal based shampoo and drying him thoroughly. You can also wipe down his feet and muzzle with a damp cloth when he comes in for the night to get as much pollen, grass, and other allergens off him before he goes to bed. Hope this helps.

Hello! Dogs are often resistant to anti histamines. I would ask your vet about apoquel which works on just the allergy portion of things, without the side effects of steroids. I would not start Brutus on any medications without approval of your vet. Hope this helps!

Poor Kane! You should call the vet that prescribed the tetracycline and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to add or change antibiotics. He might also need an anti-inflammatory to help decrease any inflammation. I don't think an OTC anti-histamine would help and I don't recommend giving anything without talking to your vet. Your vet may also want to get a nasal x-ray to look for abnormalities since it doesn't seem to be getting better. Hope he gets better soon!

If Jeter keeps sneezing frequently, and there has not been any improvement to Benadryl, it would be worth trying stronger anti-allergic medication (for example steroids) or / and a course of antibiotics. If this treatment does not make any difference, the next step would be checking the nasal cavity with a camera.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. Yes, you can bathe a dog weekly. Nexgard is used monthly. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
