My dog's allergies cause sneezing & mucous. Meds aren't working. Help!

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

Chlopheniramine maleate 4mg 1/2 tab twice a day for dachshund is not helping. He has had mucous, sneezes many times in a row. They says it is allergies. Have had erays, lungs are clear. When he is on antibiotics it seems to decrease. Should I try a steroid with a vet? I have basic allergy med in house 180 mg Fexofenadine hydrochloride I could break up into a half a tablet i.e. 70mg. Not sure if I can give him this. What do you recommend?

Hello!

Dogs are often resistant to anti histamines.

I would ask your vet about apoquel which works on just the allergy portion of things, without the side effects of steroids.

I would not start Brutus on any medications without approval of your vet.

Hope this helps!
