Why does my dog roll on the floor and rub his face? Is it allergies?

Based on what you are describing I would guess that Charlie may have gotten stung or bitten by something on his face while on the walk. He should be fine and may just have a little focal area of irritation. If you notice any facial swelling he may be having an allergic reaction. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dobey. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. It sounds like he is very itchy. Has he had a recent diet change? If it happens after eating, he could be experiencing an allergic reaction to his food. How many bowel movements does he have per day? If it is more than 2-3 or he is having loose stool, then this is a sign the food is bothering him as well. Other possibilities are environmental allergies, a contact allergy or an infectious cause. His veterinarian will examine him and guide you on either skin tests or medication trials. In the meantime, you can bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to help soothe the skin. I hope this information helps!

I suspect that his eyes are bothering him and he is rubbing his face on anything he can find. You can certainly try Benadryl with him and see if it helps. Bleu maybe rubbing his face on his treats due to excitement, to mark his scent on the food, in the wild dogs do this to tell others in their pack where the food is, it could be a form of resource guarding or simply because he just is so happy and loves treats! There are many reason why our pets rub themselves along the furniture. You might think of this as a sign of affection. Your dog may be pressing his scent or marking his territory. This is usually a comforting type of behavior for our pets. You might consider adding an addition 30 minute walk into your pets daily exercise plan. This may help to relax your pet some. To rule out any medical cause, you'll want to visit your local Vet and have him/her examine your pet for any signs of irritation or infection. These may include redness of the gums or any inflammation in the ears. If your pet is experiencing any of these signs your doctor may request a dental cleaning and ear cleaning along with medications to treat the underlying cause of infection. Both are very important.

Hello, sorry to hear about Marley. It sounds like he is having an episode of allergic skin disease. Skin allergies in dogs may be cause by 3 common problems. 1. Flea allergy dermatitis - Allergy to the flea saliva which is caused when a flea bites a dog wether it has flea protection or not. A single flea bite can be enough to induce an allergic response 2. Environmental allergies - Allergy to the environment includes things such as dust mites, pollen, human dander, cat dander, grasses, and detergents. These are typically contact allergies, meaning an allergic response is caused when your pet comes into contact with an environmental allergen. 3. Food Allergies: Allergies to a protein in the food. Most commonly chicken and beef are proteins that dogs can be allergic to. Diagnostics include ensuring your pet is protects against fleas on a monthly basis and treating your environment for fleas monthly as well. The next step is to try food trials with novel protein foods or hypoallergenic food. Finally, doing an allergy test to check for environmental allergies. Treatment includes administering allergy medications, calming shampoos, and treating secondary bacterial or yeast infections as needed. This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be due to a trauma an infection (bacterial or fungal) or mites.

 First of all, you will need to ask the vet to have a look at it (we can do it as well if you ask for a consultation) and perform some skin testing, this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation.

 If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy.

 Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (anti-inflammatories and/or antibiotics).
