My dog's nose has an itchy rash. Why is she rubbing her face on carpet?

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | unspayed | 150 lbs

My great Dane has a sort of rash on and underneath her nose. It seems to itch because she rubs her face on the carpet

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be due to a trauma an infection (bacterial or fungal) or mites.  
First of all, you will need to ask the vet to have a look at it (we can do it as well if you ask for a consultation) and perform some skin testing, this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation.   If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy.  
Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (anti-inflammatories and/or antibiotics).

Your dog sounds like she may be suffering from an allergic skin reaction, a bacterial skin infection (they itch terribly sometimes), or possibly some contact with an irritant or fire ants. Since this has been getting worse over the past few days and started bleeding, I strongly suggest you take Emma Rose to your veterinarian for an exam and itch relief. Depending on the exam findings he will likely give you an ointment for her face, possibly steroids and an antibiotic to calm down the lesions. Then, depending on how that heals and whether it goes away or not, further diagnostics re allergies may be necessary.

Awww what a sweet face! A number of different things could cause what you are seeing. It may be a bacterial skin infection, a fungal infection such as ringworm or an allergic cause of some kind. Ideally, she should be seen by your veterinarian. If you are not able to do so, you can try a product such as Zymox, for a few days. If it is not improving after 3-4 days, please take her to your veterinarian. Thank you for asking PetCoach!

Thank you for posting the pictures, they are helpful. I am concerned that it could be a bacterial infection. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. She may been antibiotics and possibly a steroid to help decrease the inflammation. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Why is my dog rubbing her nose on the carpet until it bleeds?

She may have been exposed to something that is making her itchy, a new cleaner in your house or something like that. I suggest giving her a bath with cool water and a mild dog shampoo, making sure to rinse her very thoroughly. If this doesn't help or if she starts rubbing again, I would get her in to see your vet to determine wi there is something else causing her discomfort.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

My dog has a sudden red raw spot on her nose and chin. What is it?

So, there are a number of things this could be. 1) This could be an allergic response to something in her environment or an insect, 2) This could be a fungal or bacterial infection that could be primary OR secondary to trauma or an allergy. Ideally I would do a prep on a slide and look under the microscope to see if there is a significant bacterial or yeast population. Regardless, however, I think she would benefit from some topical treatment depending on what is seen under the microscope. If it seems to be spreading, and the area is swollen, some injectable or oral medications may be indicated.

It sounds like Ruffo may be experiencing an allergic reaction. This could be due to something in the environment, foods, bee stings, etc, especially if it is causing facial swelling or puffiness. I would definitely schedule a visit with your vet to figure out the underlying cause and get him started on some meds such as an antihistamines to help with the swelling and itchiness. If the swelling worsens on his nose, or appears on his face, head, or neck, seeking care sooner is best as this is considered a serious condition.

Why does my dog get a rash around his mouth and nose sometimes?

I am sorry to hear about your dog! If this is coming and going I would wonder if there is something he is occasionally getting into that he has an allergy to, such as a plant in your yard. Or perhaps he is getting a special treat/table scrap on the days he breaks out that he has an allergy to. I would recommend bringing him in during a flare up for his vet to examine him as we do worry when we have lesions develop along the edge of the nose about autoimmune disease, so he should be examined to ensure this isn't something that needs to be further investigated.
