Why is my dog's poop reddish after spay, antibiotics, and Nexgard?

Small amounts of red to brown blood in the stool is not necessarily something to be extremely concerned about. Some simple irritating somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract could easily be the cause for such a finding. If you had said that the feces was tarry or black in color, I would be more concerned about something like a gastric ulcer, which could be caused by the Novox. As long as the bleeding isn't something that you would characterize as excessive, I would just continue to monitor for increases and perhaps bring a fecal sample into your vet for parasitic analysis. The change is stool color is probably from the medication or new supplement. It doesn’t look like it is from blood from the photo. As long as he’s feeling fine finish the antibiotics and check the stool after they are done. It should go back to his normal stool color. Hello. The surgical incision looks very good, & her stool is normal, so this may be a case of stress-induced colitis. If she is otherwise feeling well, eating & drinking normally, then I would not be too concerned. The blood should go away. If there is still blood present in the stool when you go back to have the staples removed, ask your veterinarian about trying a round of the antibiotic, Metronidazole. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bloody stools like that can happen from colitis for example which can be secondary to stress or an infection for instance. I recommend you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and to start her on therapy. Most cases of colitis respond well to medications like metronidazole. Also, it is important to make sure she is not dehydrated as that can happen from repetitive bowel movements. Good luck and have a good day!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rocky! The red color is from blood. Blood in the stool indicates inflammation in the colon. The stool in the picture is diarrhea. Possible causes of bloody diarrhea after being spayed are: Effects of anesthesia and stress, from pain medications she received or is still on (Rimadyl, deramax, meloxicam....). Other causes: virla infection, food sensitivity, ate something gross outside, and toxin ingestion. I would call your Vet and tell them she is having bloody diarrhea and they will likely prescribe some medications to help. They may also tell you to stop any pain medications they sent home with her after the spay. You can start feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed about 1 cup per 10lbs per day until 1-2 normal stools. If she starts vomiting or doesn't want to eat or is lethargic she may need to be seen by your Vet. Good luck!

Riley’s stool looks a bit soft. This may be be from being on doxycycline as antibiotic associated diarrhea is fairly common. Your vet may be able to dispense a probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable that can help return the stool to normal. The blood may be due to stress colitis. Typically, metronidazole (flagyl) is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic for the gut that recommended for blood tinged soft stool, however as she just finished a course of antibiotics, putting her on probiotics and a plain boiled rice and chicken diet (unless she has an allergy to chicken) or a prescription Hills intestinal diet or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet for 3-5 days may be enough to allow the irritated intestinal mucosa to heal. That could happen after administration of Nexgard, even though is quite unusual and it is more likely to be dietary related. I would suggest to withhold food for the next 4 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
