My puppy has red, bloody diarrhea after spay. What should I do?

Hello. The surgical incision looks very good, & her stool is normal, so this may be a case of stress-induced colitis. If she is otherwise feeling well, eating & drinking normally, then I would not be too concerned. The blood should go away. If there is still blood present in the stool when you go back to have the staples removed, ask your veterinarian about trying a round of the antibiotic, Metronidazole. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Raegan! Having diarrhea secondary to eating a different brand of food is common. I don't think it has to do with the brand but more with Raegan being more sensitive to abrupt food changed than other dogs. The blood commonly occurs with severe diarrhea, it indicated inflammation in the colon. When blood appears in the stool I think it is best to have the pet seen and antibiotics started (metronidazole). Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion and the obvious food intolerance. I feel it is best to have her seen before the weekend but if you can't get her in then I recommend fasting her for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract then restart feeding with a bland diet. Boil chicken or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs and feed the diet until 2 normal stools then slowly transition her back to her dry food. This could be completely normal after the surgery and could be due to an inflammation of the last part of the colon. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If you continue to see blood in her poop, she starts having diarrhea, it continues to be painful for her to poop, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. The diarrhea and blood can be from the raw hide so I would avoid them in the future. If she is eating, bright and not vomiting you can wait until Monday. Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, other dietary indiscretions, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/table food/food. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish Luna the best!

I don't think this could be related to the beef she was given as that was 2 weeks ago and would be atypical anyways. I would advise that if this continues, worsens, or other signs develop, you should take Happy to your veterinarian to have her evaluated. Your vet can gather a detailed history and perform a thorough examination. From those, a diagnostic/treatment plan can be developed and started. Possible problems include intestinal parasites, gastrointestinal ulcer, toxin exposure, infection, inflammation, foreign body ingestion, nutritional problems, among many other things. Your vet may advise fecal/blood/urine tests and some imaging studies (x-rays, ultrasound) to get started. Once the cause is determined or suspected a treatment plan can be started. Treatment could include fluids, electrolytes, acid blockers, gastrointestinal protectants, deworming, antibiotics, medicines for diarrhea, etc. Good luck with Happy.
