Why is there blood on my dog's reddish-brown poop? Should I worry?

No, this isn't normal, and it sounds like Carmel may have some blood in her feces. It could be caused by intestinal worms, eating something rotten, trauma to her GI tract, or a foreign body among other causes. As long as Carmel is eating and drinking normally, and is behaving normally, you can wait to take her into the vet in the morning. If she's vomiting, having diarrhea, lethargic, and doesn't want to eat or drink, I would have her seen by a vet immediately. The vet can diagnose what is causing the blood in her feces, and can treat her for it.

Hello. That is definitely a little blood in the stool, but not enough to be overly concerned with. The first step is to have the stool examined by your veterinarian to see if he picked up some parasites, like hookworms or whipworms. If all is clear, your vet may decide to put Milo on an antibiotic, like metronidazole for a few days, but as long as he is feeling fine, & his stool remains fairly normal, this is not an emergency. Blood in the poop can be from intestinal parasites, polpys or a mass, irritation of the intestines from eating bones, intestinal inflammation or from infected anal sacs. With one episode I’m not overly concerned about it as long as your dog is acting normal. If it continues I recommend a fecal test, have the anal sacs expressed, and palpate for a mass in the rectum. The red steak in the picture may be blood; or I could also be convinced that it is some light red material in the poo. If your dog tends to rip up things like clothes or other non-food items, then I would inspect the poo a little closer. If it is blood, then no need to worry too much at this time. This indicates that Paxi has bleeding in her colon, rectum, or anus. This can happen due to certain infections, or trauma (this can happen if Paxi is scooting) to the anus. However, this bleeding is often transient (often goes away in a day or two) and does not need treatment right away. If she also had diarrhea, then I would be more concerned. If the stools remain a normal shape like this, and Paxi is otherwise behaving normal, then I think it's OK to wait a day or two and see if the red streaks stop. If you continue to see this for more than 24 hours, then I recommend taking Paxi and a poo sample to the vet for examination. I hope that helps and all is well with Paxi.

This can be from a mass in the rectum, irritation from pushing out hard stool, or she may have an anal infection causing the bleeding. If this continues I recommend a veterinary exam. They will check the anal sacs and palpate inside the rectum for a mass. Make sure the stool isn’t too firm. Adding fiber to the diet will bulk up the stool and make it easier to pass.
