My dog has red spots and bumps on her belly after spay. Allergy or bites?

It may be an allergy to something specific in the environment or something else like fleas or food. This may go away on its own if it is something minor. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. You can consider a medicated shampoo you can get at your local pet store containing chlorhexidine which may help with a mild superficial infection. You may use this twice weekly. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

These spots are usually due to a bacterial skin infection. the round red spots, hesitating in circular darker areas are commonly called epidermal collarettes. A mild antiseptic shampoo for dogs based on 4% chlorhexidine digluconate can be used with good results in these cases. This can be used twice weekly until complete resolution is seen.

Skin lesions like Coco has can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, an insect bite like you mentioned, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Coco seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesion you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Coco in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the area, but this will likely not resolve the lesion.I recommend getting Coco on parasite prevention year round. Hi there, Is this dark red circle flat and not swollen? If so, it appears most similar to a black fly bite. You can look these up on google images. They are generally benign but some dogs benefit from anti itch medications. If its warm to touch or swollen, or she seems to develop more of these bruises even while indoors, those would be reasons to have Stevie seen by her vet to ensure it's not something more serious.
