My Shih Tzu has red, sore eyes after a dog fight. Is Maxitrol safe?

As long as there are only the 2 antibiotics you mentioned in the eye drops and no steroids (like prednisone or hydrocortisone), it will be safe to use as previously prescribed. However, I recommend that Shilo see the vet as soon as possible for diagnosis as sometimes what appears to be an infection may actually be something else, like a corneal ulcer or dry eye.

I would not recommend using anything until a diagnosis has been reached. There are many causes for red eyes and allergies are quite uncommon - I would also be concerned about dry eye, ulcers, stray eyelashes contacting the surface of the eye or conjunctivitis. I recommend a prompt check up and eye exam by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is used as early as possible

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. At this point given she has not improved, I would recommend you consider having her evaluated by a veterinary ophthalmologist who can recommend further. It's important to have any eye infections examined and treated promptly, as leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can confirm that she does have an eye infection, and can prescribe an antibiotic eye ointment to treat it.

I am so sorry to hear that Kaimana is experiencing these problems with her eye. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Kaimana to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is injured, inflamed or infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Her to scratch or rub her eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. An rlceration is a tear in the top layer of the eye and is a serious condition. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly I would have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue immediately. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Your vet will use a special tear stain drop to visualise the eye and the top layer to make are there are no ulcerations, and check for other conditions before prescribing medications. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. Both are antibiotic ointments, so I would recommend sticking with the Isathal for now and scheduling another appointment if she's not feeling better after 24 hours. You can increase the frequency of the Isathal because extra lubrication can help with comfort. Another thing to ask your veterinarian about it placing a contact on her eye - not all vets have these in their offices, but if they do it can help a lot with comfort. Good luck to you and Jasmine. Based on the pictures, I suspect that Willow may have an eye infection or dry eye. I would recommend having Willow examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may need antibiotic eye drops / ointment or dry eye medication. I would recommend that the vet stains her eye and checks to see if she has dry eye by using a Schirmer Tear Test.
