Is Optimyxin safe for my Shih Tzu's eye infection before a vet visit?

I would not recommend using anything until a diagnosis has been reached. There are many causes for red eyes and allergies are quite uncommon - I would also be concerned about dry eye, ulcers, stray eyelashes contacting the surface of the eye or conjunctivitis. I recommend a prompt check up and eye exam by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is used as early as possible

I am worried that Atasha might have a corneal abrasion, or a scratch on her eye from the bite wound that could be infected. Her other wounds could be infected as well. Maxitrol contains dexamethasone which could make a corneal abrasion worse so I would not recommend using this drop. Shih Tzus in particular tend to have trouble with corneal abrasions so it would be best to have your vet take a look as soon as you can. Hope she’s feeling better soon!

The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Your vet will use a special tear stain drop to visualise the eye and the top layer to make are there are no ulcerations, and check for other conditions before prescribing medications. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. I would not use these drugs on Storm's eye unless prescribed by a vet. I would have her seen by a vet ASAP for her hyphema, as any eye problem is considered an emergency.

Hi there! I am assuming you are using Optimmune for dry eye? If so, there is often an eye infection as well that is brewing, due to having low tears. Because of this, I strongly recommend that you see a vet sooner, rather than later, as there are likely to be additional medications that can help your dog's eyes.

Hello and thank you for the update. Please, do not use dexamethasone as it is detrimental in case of corneal damage. You can use Ciprofloxacine instead twice a day until you can get Roshni seen by your vet. There is no need to use systemic antibiotic, like Amoxicilin.
