My Shih Tzu has watery, red eyes. Why isn't Benadryl helping?

He could have a bacterial infection and need an antibiotic to treat. Since the Benadryl is not working, he should be examined by a vet for treatment. Your vet can prescribe an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory, if needed, to treat.

Benadryl is used to treat allergic reactions and allergies so if it seems to be helping then he probably has allergies. If the signs persist then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. He may need an antibiotic and a corticosteroid to help treat the problem. You could also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps. Hope he he feels better soon!

Benadryl is unlikely to help but won't hurt anything. You can also try a warm compress and saline eye wash to make sure there is nothing in there irritating them. If she is unable hold them open or the swelling gets worse or you notice a mucous discharge then I would take her to a vet tonight. If it is not better by tomorrow then I would take her in then

Hello there! Vennesa could have a severe eye infection, may have injured her eye, or could have glaucoma. She needs to see a vet for this problem, and she has to see one as soon a possible. Leaving an eye problem untreated can lead to permanent vision loss, and this will be painful for her. There are no pain medications you can give, as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. In addition, this eye problem can't be treated at home. Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Winston's eye troubles. Since he was already treated for pink eye, perhaps another visit with his veterinarian to follow up would be a good idea. The doctor can recheck his eyes and make sure the infection hasn't returned. It could also be allergies, and you may need something stronger than benadryl. Other things I could think of in a young dog are viral infections in the respiratory tract that can cause eye discharge to build up. Also, they can sometimes have issues with eye lash hairs growing in the wrong places, and even with the eye lids rolling in. Sometimes these issues get worse as they grow, so may not be obvious initially. I think a follow up vet visit is definitely warranted. I wouldn't worry too much until the veterinarian looks at the eyes and reassesses the situation though. It may be something as simple as needing another round of medication, or even just a stronger allergy medication. Best of luck!

I would not recommend using anything until a diagnosis has been reached. There are many causes for red eyes and allergies are quite uncommon - I would also be concerned about dry eye, ulcers, stray eyelashes contacting the surface of the eye or conjunctivitis. I recommend a prompt check up and eye exam by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is used as early as possible

Based on the pictures, I suspect that Willow may have an eye infection or dry eye. I would recommend having Willow examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may need antibiotic eye drops / ointment or dry eye medication. I would recommend that the vet stains her eye and checks to see if she has dry eye by using a Schirmer Tear Test.
