My dog has a raw, red patch under its eye. Is it a hot spot or mites?

Thank you for your question! Judging from the pictures, the area is reddened, inflamed and the hair has fallen out. It looks as though Mickey could possibly be dealing with a skin infection or skin mites. I would recommend you take him to your veterinarian for a workup of this to diagnose it appropriately so that the most effective treatment can be prescribed. Mickey will likely need to go on a course of oral antibiotics and a topical ointment to treat this if it is a skin infection and if it is skin mites (demodex) he would need to go on a course of a medication that kills the mites. That looks like it could be an infection, skin mites or perhaps ringworm (which humans can get). I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian if the lesion does not start getting better on it's own within the next few days. May sure he cannot rub the area and don't put anything on the area since it's so close to his eye. You can also have him examined sooner and not wait. This is most likely a skin infection from the skin being moist all the time and unable to dry out. I would try using some medicated wipes twice a day in that area. I like dechra's miconahex wipes. This will help to dry the area out and get rid of the bacteria. If it isn't improving, I would have your vet take a look at him. He may need some oral antibiotics and a low dose of steroids to help clear it up. I hope this helps!

Hello Mark, this could be an allergy or a mite infestation, there are other things that can cause that but these two options are the most common. i would recommend having it checked by your vet and have a skin scrape done in order to confirm or rule out the mite possibility as the first step and then go from there according to the result.

Ouch! That looks uncomfortable. There are a few potential causes for JJ's eyes issues. The first could be pain or inflammation of the actual eyeball, and JJ could be rubbing his eyes and irritating the skin. There is a mange mite called Demodex that canal so cause reddening of the skin around the eyes. There are also a few other inflammatory or infectious things that can cause this as well. If he is not back to normal in 48 hours, or if it appears to get worse, I think the best thing for JJ would be to have an exam with a veterinarian. Mange mites can easily be diagnosed in the clinic and treatment can be started right away before it gets worse!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. This could also be due to something like mites and that can be easily determined with an exam and basic cytology which your veterinarian can perform. There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch. 

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. 

Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). 

If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests.

 Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It is possible but not likely. It can be local irritation or infection from a small wound or it may be a small growth that is causing irritation. Place an e-collar (cone) on her if she is scratching or rubbing. This may be enough to allow healing. If not, have Maggie examined by your veterinarian to diagnose infection or injury.
