My dog has a sore patch under his eye. Should I take him to the vet?

Poor Sandy. That area looks really irritated. Certainly mites can cause hair loss around the eye, but we normally see hair loss around both eyes without any redness or moisture (which it appears that Sandy has). It also appears that Sandy has some crusting along the inside of the area as well. It may be more likely that he has a bacterial skin infection called a hot spot (https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2714) that results from an overgrowth of normal bacteria on the skin. Your veterinarian can perform a couple of simple skin tests to determine if Sandy has any evidence of mites, if we are dealing with a bacterial infection of the skin or if there is another problem. That may require looking at a sample under the microscope. Then they can help you determine the best treatment for him since we have to be careful treating the skin around the eye. Good luck! That lesion could be many things including an abrasion that is healing, a bacterial infection or something like ringworm (which humans can get). That's good that she is not scratching at it. You may monitor it at home. If it is not getting better after a week, if it starts looking worse or if she starts rubbing at it, have Bella examined by the veterinarian. It definitely looks irritated and like there could be a possible cyst or growth there. I would have it examined by a vet in person so that it can be looked at more closely and treated as needed, especially since it's by the eye, bothersome, and been there a while. In addition, placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Midnight is a good idea as this will stop her from being able to paw at it and may reduce the irritation to it some.

That looks like it is quite painful. Your first order of business should be preventing your dog from causing any further harm. Obtain an e-collar or make one at home. You should be able to find a website or video on how to do this. Next step will be applying some antibiotic ointment, preferably one that also contains some steroid to help with inflammation and itchiness. Some lesions like this one may require systemic antibiotics to fight off infection or prevent a worse one from manifesting. If this truly appeared completely overnight, I would qualify this as a rapidly forming lesion that should be seen in person by a vet. The vet will be able to obtain skin samples and cytology in order to get a better idea of what we are truly dealing with. He will be able to offer you more targeted therapy that may ultimately result in a quicker and more effective healing process.

Unfortunately, there is no way for us to tell what it is just by looking at a photo. Many skin issues can look the same to the naked eye. I suggest you have Tuck to the vet for an exam. The most common reasons for something like this would be: mange mites, ringworm, injury/scrape. Of course there are many other things it could. It is not an emergency but get him to the vet for an exam soon.

Lesions like this can be a few things including a skin tumor, an ingrown hair, an infection or a blocked pore. You may monitor this lesion for the next week. Protect the area from scratching or rubbing with an elizabethan collar if needed and you may apply a warm (not hot) compress twice a day for 5 minutes. Check the lesion every day. Hello. From this picture that could be a small scar, could be a small bit of hair loss from many causes (scratching, infection, etc), could be inflammation of the gland, or could just be a wart or something. I would just keep an eye on it and if it bothers him or grows or changes, or if he starts squinting, to have it seen by a vet. Good luck with him!
