My dog's eyes are red, itchy, and swollen. Could it be allergies?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 years old

Oliver is on Apoquel for allergies but sometimes his eyes still get watery and itchy. They are slightly red and swollen right now and he is rubbing at them. Is there anything I can do or buy at a petsmart to relieve his irritated eyes?

Do not give any or apply anything into Oliver's eyes without the advice of your veterinarian. Contact your vet about giving an antihistamine in addition to Apoquel to Oliver for relief. There are OTC antihistamines that can be used in dogs as well as several prescription options. Discuss dosing with your vet as, legally, we are unable to recommend medications and dosing in the absence of a patient-vet-client relationship and a physical exam.

    It sounds like Oliver is either having an allergic reaction or is beginning to get an eye infection. You could give him an over the counter antihistamine. Also make sure Oliver is not rubbing his eyes as this will make the condition worse. If they are remaining inflamed, I would take him into the veterinarian to get him checked out. If Chopper does have allergies, antihistamines may provide some relief. He should first be examined by your veterinarian though, to rule out injury or infection. Your vet can recommend an OTC antihistamine or may dispense one for Chopper after the exam. For now, if he is pawing or rubbing his eyes, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the vet.

I would worry that the swelling might be due to an eyelid infection or allergic reaction, and Goodwinol would not treat these problems. It's also possible that the Goodwinol would cause irritation so close to the eye. I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian since oral medications like antibiotics might be necessary. If Zeppelin is squinting or other areas of his face seem swollen I'd recommend seeing your vet.

Place an e-collar cone on him to prevent rubbing or pawing at the eyes. Consider a recheck with your veterinarian or a veterinary opthalmologist to diagnose eye infection or injury. Certain OTC antihistamines can be used but only under the direction and guidance of your veterinarian.

Poor pup! Given this keeps happening when she is outside, I'm wondering if it is allergies. She may do well with a longer acting medication like a steroid, or a specific allergy medication like Apoquel. I'd make her an appointment with your vet to discuss these options. I hope this helps!

Why are my dog's eyes swollen and itchy after I ate oranges?
This could be due to allergies or she could have gotten into something or even an infection can cause this. You can try 25mg Benadryl by mouth but I would take her in to your vet this morning for an exam as she will likely need strongly medicine than Benadryl and maybe even some antibiotics.
