My dog's eye is swollen and itchy. Should I take him to the vet?

Do not give any or apply anything into Oliver's eyes without the advice of your veterinarian. Contact your vet about giving an antihistamine in addition to Apoquel to Oliver for relief. There are OTC antihistamines that can be used in dogs as well as several prescription options. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cotton! When it comes to eye issues I recommend a Vet examine the pet. Cotton's eyes could be swollen from an allergic reaction to an insect/spider bite or from some allergen outside or from an infection. The mainstay of treatment for an allergic reaction are steroids and antihistamines. An infection is treated with antibiotics and steroids. Your Vet will want to be sure the eye balls themselves are ok and don't have a scratch on them (corneal ulcer). I hope this helps and I wish Cotton a speedy recovery!

That looks like chemosis - swelling of the conjunctiva. The underlying cause, I don't know. All the things I can think of that can cause chemosis should easily resolve with topical steroids. Since it is not resolving, then yes, I think a consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist would be necessary at this point. Best wishes.

You need to have Chico seen by a vet today for this. He could have a severe eye infection, and rubbing his eye will make things worse. Any eye problem has to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into a vet today.

He looks to be generally itchy. I'm suspicious of allergies causing this, but it could be due to mange, fleas, or other causes. The eye may be a separate problem, or related to the allergies. Without seeing it, it's difficult to tell the cause of this, or the severity, but the fact that it's swollen shut warrants a visit to the vet. I recommend having him seen by a vet within the next 24 hours to prevent serious complications with the eye. The vet can also help narrow-down the cause of the itch and provide medication to help give him some relief. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. For now, you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth. Oscar needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. That swelling most likely indicates an allergic reaction, a deep skin infection or cellulitis. All of these conditions require treatment. Make sure to protect his eyes from any rubbing by having him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Rubbing the eye could make things worse. Have him seen quickly. Best of luck.
