My dog has puffy, swollen eyes. Is it allergies? What can I do?

This sounds unusual, it is definitely not normal. Without seeing what the eye looks like when it is puffy and inflamed it is hard to tell what's going on. In the picture you provided the eyes look normal. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet to have his eyes checked out to make sure there is nothing too serious going on. He may simply have some allergies and need to be on an antihistamine in the evenings to prevent his eyes from becoming irritated and swollen.

Do not give any or apply anything into Oliver's eyes without the advice of your veterinarian. Contact your vet about giving an antihistamine in addition to Apoquel to Oliver for relief. There are OTC antihistamines that can be used in dogs as well as several prescription options. Discuss dosing with your vet as, legally, we are unable to recommend medications and dosing in the absence of a patient-vet-client relationship and a physical exam.

An e-collar (cone) would be the best way to prevent scratching or rubbing. The end off the cone should extend at least two inches beyond the tip of the nose. Ask your veterinarian for a dose for an over the counter antihistamine, such as Benadryl or Zyrtec. Either can be used In dogs to control itching and other symptoms of allergies.

If Chopper does have allergies, antihistamines may provide some relief. He should first be examined by your veterinarian though, to rule out injury or infection. Your vet can recommend an OTC antihistamine or may dispense one for Chopper after the exam. For now, if he is pawing or rubbing his eyes, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the vet.

It is really hard to say for sure. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good exam. Since it is her eyes that are affected it is important to make sure she does not need medications/eye drops to resolve the issue. If it is related to allergies you can try an over the counter anti histamine and possibly place a warm compress on the eyes 2 times a day to help remove debris and decrease inflammation. He can have a possible infection or conjunctivitis since it is affected both eyes. Since the discharge is getting worse and he does not want to open his eyes, it is best he sees a vet to determine if there is a scratch on the cornea or just an infection. There is topical antibiotics +/- a steroid to help clear them. The only thing you can do at home is rinse with sterile eye wash and try to apply a warm compress to help with the swelling.

He looks to be generally itchy. I'm suspicious of allergies causing this, but it could be due to mange, fleas, or other causes. The eye may be a separate problem, or related to the allergies. Without seeing it, it's difficult to tell the cause of this, or the severity, but the fact that it's swollen shut warrants a visit to the vet. I recommend having him seen by a vet within the next 24 hours to prevent serious complications with the eye. The vet can also help narrow-down the cause of the itch and provide medication to help give him some relief. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. For now, you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth.
