Dog's red, itchy, scabby ear: Is it infected or can I use Neosporin?

Because it is localized to the one spot than you can alternate neosporin with cortisone cream to help keep it clean and take away some of the itching. It does not appear scarred so hair should regrow when it heals. If it doesn't improve in the next day or so your vet can prescribe oral medication to help with the itching and infection

If you have noticed Max scratching excessively at the ear that has the scab on it he may have an underlying ear infection. If you look inside his ear and it is red, inflammed or has any odor or discharge he likely has an infection and will need to see your vet so some ear medication can be prescribed. If the inside of the ear looks clean and normal he probably just accidentally injured the outside of his ear. If this is the case I'd recommend continuing the Vaseline or putting some Neosporin on the scab until it heals.

Poor Teddy! Yes, it's normally okay to use a topical antibiotic spray or ointment on minor skin wounds like this. Many pet owners use Neosporin, which is fine. You can also get a product such as Nutri-Vet or Vetericyn spray, which are labeled for use in dogs, from your local pet store if you prefer. If you see any redness, swelling, or drainage from the wound developing over the next few days, I would recommend taking Teddy to the vet to have it checked, as these can be signs of a more serious infection that would require prescription antibiotics to treat.

It may be infected as a scab has formed and trapped the bacteria. I would gently soak the area and clean it with soap and water. Then place neosporin on it. I would also make an appointment with my vet to to have it checked to see if oral antibiotics are needes

This appears to be some sort of topical dermatitis. It can be caused by an underlying allergy, a bacterial infection or a fungal infection. You will most likely need to put a topical medication on the sores to help them clear up. You can try some triple antibiotic ointment at home and see if that helps. Dodger sounds like he is quite uncomfortable! Neosporin may help but ultimately you are going to want to try and identify why he is so itchy. You also want to put a stop to the itchiness in order to prevent any more damage. Depending on the extent of the damage he has done, he may require a systemic antibiotic to treat a skin infection. Scratching at the face is usually caused by an allergic reaction to something, typically environmental, contact, or even food. A food allergy just starting at the age of eight would be uncommon but not impossible. You should look into an e-collar for Dodger (or make a home made one) in order to prevent him from itching until the problem is resolved. Medications are also available to address the itchiness Dodger is experiencing including both steroidal and non-steroidal options. Your veterinarian will be able to discuss these options with you in some detail once seeing how your dog actually looks.

I would recommend taking Boo to the vet to have his ears and skin examined. Boo certainly could have a yeast or bacterial infection in his ears - ear infections are common in dogs and medicated ointments are necessary to treat the infection. It's possible that the scabs and scratch are related to a skin infection, or they could be from trauma. Allergies are a common cause of both ear and skin infections.
