My dog's eye is red, anus swollen, and he's limping. What should I do?

My 9 year old Mini American Eskimo has suddenly fallen sick. He has a very swollen anus/anal sacs, he has suddenly stopped putting any weight on his back left leg, he has some kind of yellow substance all over his fur, and his left eyeball is very red where it should be white. When he was 2, he was hit by a car and had a plate put in his back left hip, but hasn't had any major issues with that leg since. He typically holds it up if he runs very fast, but the last two days, he has had it tuck

Poor Wompa! It sounds like he has a lot going on with him at the moment, and he should see a vet immediately. It's quite concerning that his eyeball is very red, and any eye condition should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. His eye could have been injured or he could have a severe infection.

I also see that Wompa isn't neutered. I would be extremely concerned that his anus is swollen due to a perianal sac tumor. Benign perianal sac tumors occur most commonly in unneutered older male dogs, but there is a chance it could be malignant. It's very important that this is examined right away as well. If his anal sacs have ruptured due to a tumor, that could be the yellow substance on his fur.

Finally, in terms of his leg, he could have arthritis in that leg. If it's very cold where you are, that could be causing him to not be able to put any weight on that left leg. I would have Wompa seen by a vet as soon as possible.

My dog has red eyes, licks a lot, and a swollen gland. Is it serious?

I’m so sorry to hear about Poppy! Red, runny eyes and licking at anus make me think allergies (which can developer at any age). The enlarged lymph node in the leg could be many things: normal, a reaction to a cut in the foot, cancer, or other. Same for the low white cell count. Depending on how low it is, it could be normal for Poppy, or indicate an infection or inflammation. As a side note, be sure she is licking at the anus and not the Vulva. If licking at the vulva I am concerned for: being in heat, UTI, uterine infection (pyometra) or other. Overall, my rule of thumb is “attitude and appetite”. If Poppy is happy, playful, eating, drinking and using the bathroom well, then there is no need to panic immediately, though I would still take her in if not improving in 48 hours. If she is lethargic, not eating, or having any other signs, it’s time to get to the vet more immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Poppy!

My dog has diarrhea and a swollen bum. When should I see a vet?

Since the diarrhea has lasted for 48 hours, he should be seen by your veterinarian. The swelling could be an anal gland abscess or a tumor. An abscess will need to be lanced and drained. A tumor should be aspirated or biopsied to collect samples for pathology. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking until he sees the doctor. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Night may go home with a bland diet, antibiotics and pain medication depending on the diagnosis.

This is an emergency, your vet should see you right away, if he refuses you have to take him to another vet that will see him today. cloudiness of the eye is a very serious symptom, there are several eye condition that could cause that but it is important to start the treatment urgently, otherwise permanent eye damage could occur.
