My dog has diarrhea and a swollen bum. When should I see a vet?

Swelling near the anus are usually secondary to a problem with the anal sac, such as an impaction, abscess or even cancer. It could also be secondary to something entirely different, such as an insect bite or a cyst. The vast majority of the time, these are not emergencies. So as long as Gidget is otherwise acting normally, you can call your veterinarian in the morning. A good physical exam will likely lead to a preliminary diagnosis and possible treatment. It is time to consider a consult with an internal medicine specialist. Advanced imaging such as endoscopy, MRI or CT would be recommended along with biopsies of the intestine. This may diagnose inflammatory or infectious conditions that can then be targeted for treatment.

From what I can see from the photo I think this looks more like inflammation or infection. Sometimes when dogs have diarrhoea they rub their bums which can lead to raw skin which in turn can become infected. Another possibility is an anal gland infection, these can burst out suddenly. There is always a possibility that it could be a tumour but it doesn't look like the typical tumours you get around the anus. With appropriate treatment an infection should heal within one to two weeks, whereas tumours would require more investigation/invasive treatment. I would chat to your bet about getting some meds for your dog if they haven't been prescribed already. Running bloods would also be prudent and may give further clues to the cause.

If your dog does not have diarrhea anymore you can put some baby cream or aloe vera cream on the affected area. If your dog still has diarrhea, stop feeding it for about 12 hrs then feed bland food (rice , broth, chicken) and if the diarrhea does not resolve within 2-3 days take her to your vet.

Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.

Ouch, poor Dudley! It could be he has growth on his anus or his anal sacs could be impacted and infected. Yes, definitely take him into a vet before his owner comes home. The vet can diagnose what is causing this swelling and bleeding, and can treat him for it. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

You should take him to the vet today to get it checked and treated, it could be an infection, an allergic reaction or a foreign body in the eye. i am not sure the diarrhea is related to the eye condition.
