My dog has raw spots around her nose and lips. Should I see a vet?

My dog has suddenly developed raw spots around her nose and lips. It doesn’t appear to itch or cause noticeable pain, but I’m wondering if it’s something more serious I need to see a vet about.

This could be due to an autoimmune disease but it is very hard to say just by looking at a photo. I suggest you have your dog examined by your vet as soon as you can get an appointment. It's not an emergency but sometime in the next couple days would be good.

It this is indeed due to a scrape, it should have begun resolve in a few days. If hasn't, get your vet to have a look at it. It could be mange, or ringworm, or even a more unusual problem like an autoimmune skin disease.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I agree that this could be an infection. It is not possible to evaluate the eye properly with just looking at a picture. I would recommend that if she is not improving on the newer treatment regimen, to have her evaluated by a veterinary ophthalmologist so they can provide their expertise on this more complex case. So, there are a number of things this could be. 1) This could be an allergic response to something in her environment or an insect, 2) This could be a fungal or bacterial infection that could be primary OR secondary to trauma or an allergy. My dog has a raw, red, oily spot below her nose. What should I do?

I am sorry to hear this. Your pet Meeiah has a very raw area that does not look normal or likely to go away on its own. This can be caused by an immune mediated skin condition (lupus) or an abrasion. I would recommend taking Meeiah to your local vet for a consultation. They may try steroid and antibiotic therapy with him as a conservative treatment or do some skin/blood testing first. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lexi. I do recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Her nose looks very sore and raw. She may require an oral antibiotic to help the wound to heal. She may also be checked for other signs of autoimmune skin disease as the nose can be one of the first areas of affected. I hope this information helps!

How to soothe raw skin around my dog's mouth from muzzle irritation?

It does look a little irritated there. That could be caused by irritation from a muzzle or face halter, or could be regular allergies starting up. I would recommend keeping the area clean and dry, for now. If it's not getting better after 3-5 days, I'd recommend a vet visit to see if she needs most medicated wipes. It's common for young dogs to get superficial bacterial infections around their lips, which usually doesn't require oral antibiotics, but may require a topical treatment. I hope that helps! If it goes away and comes back right away or even next fall, you'll know it's allergies and can start a conversation about that with your vet. Good luck!

My dog's nose is raw and peeling with a rash. Should I wait for the vet?

It is not uncommon for dogs to traumatize the top of their nose when they are in a kennel or cage and trying to get out. They usually rub a sore on the wire part of the cage. If the wound does not seem to be bothering her, you may be okay waiting to see her regular veterinarian. If she seems uncomfortable or the wound/rash are worsening or spreading, then it may be best to get her in somewhere sooner. If you start to notice that the wound looks infected (pus coming from it), I would bring Wendy in sooner because the worse it gets, the longer it will take to heal. If you have an E-collar (the lamp shade looking device) at home, I would put that on her in the meantime to prevent her from further damaging the area. Hope Wendy heals quickly!
