How to soothe raw skin around my dog's mouth from muzzle irritation?

Sometimes these lesions can occur from rubbing the muzzle on cages doors, carpets...etc. Sometimes they can also be from infection and less commonly from an autoimmune disease. I would recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian who will likely prescribe medication orally. Treating this area topically can be difficult as most dogs will lick off any medication you apply to the area so oral medications are generally best. You should also protect the area from further rubbing with an elizabethan collar which should be worn at all times. You can try gently washing the ears with an antibacterial hand soap (rinse well) once daily if he tolerate it. Hello, this looks like a case of moist dermatitis, or a hot spot, sometimes caused by an allergy. You can gently clean this with an antibacterial solution like Hibiclens available at all pharmacies. Then apply a light coating of 1% hydrocortisone twice a day. It should look better in a day or so, but if not, please see your veterinarian for further treatment. Thank you.

Sometimes just wiping with a warm wet cloth and drying thoroughly once per day can help with a moist dermatitis. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. She may have a mild skin infection around her muzzle. If she has had any new treats or dog food she may be reacting to the diet change. This will be more common if she is experiencing irritated skin around her anus as well or if she has had any vomiting or diarrhea. If not, check her eyelid margins, ears and footpads for any lesions. These are commonly affected areas for autoimmune skin disease. If her skin does not heal or spreads, she will need to see her veterinarian. In the meantime, keep her muzzle clean and dry. Hello. This looks like a bacterial infection that she picked up. If it is not bothering her much, then I would just pick up some Hibiclens at the pharmacy & gently clean the area a couple of time a day. Is there anything she could have chewed on to cause that inflammation in the corners, mainly electrical cords? It seems very raw and blistered but does not appear infected by that picture. All you can do is clean the area with soap and water as any other topicals will just get ingested. If it is not better in a day or so take her to your vet for an exam to see why it is not clearing

So, there are a number of things this could be. 1) This could be an allergic response to something in her environment or an insect, 2) This could be a fungal or bacterial infection that could be primary OR secondary to trauma or an allergy. Ideally I would do a prep on a slide and look under the microscope to see if there is a significant bacterial or yeast population. Regardless, however, I think she would benefit from some topical treatment depending on what is seen under the microscope. If it seems to be spreading, and the area is swollen, some injectable or oral medications may be indicated.
