My dog's nose is red and dry on one side. When should I see a vet?

This could be due to an autoimmune disease but it is very hard to say just by looking at a photo. I suggest you have your dog examined by your vet as soon as you can get an appointment. It's not an emergency but sometime in the next couple days would be good.

Poor baby. Definitely looks red and irritated. It may need oral antibiotics or possibly just some topical antibiotics. I would call and schedule an exam and get the correct medications. I am sorry to hear about Lexi. While it is impossible to provide a diagnosis from a photo, it looks like Lexi could be suffering from acute moist pyoderma, also known as a "hot spot". They can shave the area with clippers, clean the skin and may prescribe either topical treatment such as a medicated shampoo or spray, or oral antibiotics/anti-inflammatory medication.

So, there are a number of things this could be. 1) This could be an allergic response to something in her environment or an insect, 2) This could be a fungal or bacterial infection that could be primary OR secondary to trauma or an allergy. Ideally I would do a prep on a slide and look under the microscope to see if there is a significant bacterial or yeast population. Regardless, however, I think she would benefit from some topical treatment depending on what is seen under the microscope. If it seems to be spreading, and the area is swollen, some injectable or oral medications may be indicated.

Several problems can cause irritated nasal planum. However, especially in herding breeds other immune disorders such as discoid lupus, pemphigus, or zinc deficiency can also cause these signs. I typically treat with oral antibiotics for 3 weeks and if it’s not resolving then I biopsy the nose for a diagnosis. Good luck and I hope it heals soon!
