Why is my dog's anus raw and sore from scooting after antibiotics?

This red and inflamed area is likely due to Cooper rubbing his bottom on the floor and should resolve, as long as he is not licking at the area. This ointment can be found online quite eaily. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. You could consider using A D ointment to put on the area around the anus in case it is irritated. You may find that at your local pharmacy. I recommend that you have Riley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.

Rather than hemorrhoid cream, I suggest some triple antibiotic ointment to help it heal. You may have nicked him with the scissors, which is really easy to do, even when you're being very careful. You can use something like the Tucks pads for hemorrhoids to clean it, then apply the antibiotic twice a day. If it doesn't improve significantly in the next day or two, I suggest getting him in to see your vet as he may need additional medication or treatment. If you get him groomed, make sure to ask them to do a sanitary clip, which will trim the hair very short around his anus to help prevent this from happening again in the future Your vet may also offer a similar service in between grooming appointments. If you want to do it at home, get a pair of clippers and use a guard to keep from cutting him.

Poor Sally! It's difficult to tell what is going on in the photos, since they're dark and somewhat blurry. If the redness is just around her tail and rectum, it's possible that this could be irritation from her diarrhea - if this is the case, it should resolve as soon as her stool firms up again. You can gently clean the area with baby wipes in the meantime if needed. If the skin issues are also affecting other parts of her body, then I would be concerned that she has developed a separate skin problem in addition to her bowel infection - it's not common to see skin issues associated with diarrhea or as a side effect of antibiotics, so I would recommend taking her back to your vet for a check-up to see what may be going on.

This may be a vaginitis, or bacterial infection of the folds around the vagina, as it apparently itches, if she is scooting. She could also have an anal gland problem, which would also explain the scooting, especially if she cannot reach her anus and just licks her vagina instead. Condition is uncomfortable at best, if not painful. You should schedule a vet appointment ASAP, as any of the OTC ointments should not be used without a proper diagnosis. They likely will not work, if this is infection.

Based on the location (it appears to be just to the side and just below the anus), an anal gland abscess may have ruptured. I doubt it’s an insect bite, but I can’t rule that out completely. It could also be another type of mass such as a tumor or a foreign body (such as a grass seed) that’s burrowed into the skin and caused an abscess. Regardless, your instincts are correct; this likely needs to be treated with antibiotics. Put an E -collar (cone of shame) on him and make an appointment with your vet ASAP. Hope that’s helpful!
