My dog's anus is red and bleeding. Can I use human hemorrhoid cream?

Hello. Yes, you can use this, or a little hydrocortisone cream, but I do not think it will really solve this problem. If he is straining due to hard stool, you can try adding a 1/2 teaspoon of Metamucil (psyllium), or a tsp. of canned pumpkin twice a day to his food to soften his stool. If his BMs are fairly normal & he is physically having problems passing stool, then this might be an arthritis issue. The best thing to do is to see your veterinarian to make sure there is not some other problem with the area, such as an anal gland infection, or even possible cancer. The dog spray is better, in my opinion, because it dries faster and then you don't have to worry about them licking it. That does look odd. As a guess, I would suspect an infection or perhaps a prolapse. I recommend to discuss with the veterinarian some type of anti-inflammatory or even an antibiotic. The vet should also preform a rectal exam to get a better idea of the anatomy of the anus. Make sure to keep the area from trauma so She may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times. She should also not drag her rectum on the ground (and if she does, keep her off rough surfaces). An omega 3 fatty acid supplement will not correct the problem but it may help to decrease inflammation and condition the skin. Prolapses sometimes require surgical correction. We do not usually see hemorrhoids in dogs. IT is quite possible that his skin is very irritated from being wet and being in contact with the feces, and this could be the cause of the pink color and raised skin. It is possible as well that cutting his fur could have caused a tiny cut in the skin (it can be very tough to cut the fur on a pet in this area without accidentally cutting the skin, we usually use clippers to do this in the vet clinic). I would wash the area well with a mild soap or dog shampoo and monitor it closely. If it becomes more red/swollen or has any discharge, a visit to your vet is needed to be sure there isn't a more significant problem.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I am sorry to hear that Switzerland is having this issue. Please understand it is very difficult to give advice without examining him or at least seeing a photo. Based solely on your description it sounds like he had an impacted anal gland that ruptured. I do think it is best to take him to a vet for an exam. The first thing you need to do though is to get him a cone collar to wear so he stops chewing at the area. If the area is still bothering him the other anal gland (they have two) may be impacted/infected as well, hence, an exam is important. There is nothing you can do to sop the bleeding at home but you can put antibiotic gel/cream on it until you can get him to the vet. Again, without the cone collar though, he will likely lick off anything you apply topically. You have to get trimmers, not scissors, to cut the hair around the rectum. This will remove any debris. You can apply a warm compress to the area to help with pain and the inflammation. Once it is all cleaned you apply cortisone cream to help

Poor Scarlet. If the wound is mild (the bleeding is stopping on its won, there is no muscle or deep tissue exposure, etc), you can apply pressure to stop the bleeding and clean the wound with saline rinse and apply triple antibiotic ointment. An E-collar or "cone" can prevent licking/biting and further trauma as the wound heals. However, if the bleeding does not stop on it's own, Scarlet appears to be in pain, or the wound is very deep, Scarlet should be seen by a vet right away, as she may need sutures, antibiotics, and pain medication.
