Why is my dog quiet and sleepy after a leg biopsy? Is it normal?

It is impossible for us to predict if this is a normal response to a sedative / pain medication, progression of the condition or a different issue entirely without knowing exactly how much and what type of injectable pain relief he was given. I recommend you contact with the vets office and inform them of the change in his status and they can confirm id this is a temporary and expected response to a strong opioid pain killer or if he needs to be reassessed

However, it could also be that this is Loki's typical behavior and sleeping pattern during the day while you are away from home. Dogs usually sleep most of the day and that is normal. If he is otherwise doing fine then he is most likely just fine. If you notice any other signs of illness such as inappetence, vomiting or diarrhea, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Otherwise, he is likely just fine. I believe you made an additional post about your dog stating that she woke up, moved around, and went back to sleep. That's a good sign. I answered that question, and it I said that depending on the medications she was given, this lethargy could be a side effect of them. Without knowing exactly what medications she was given, I can't say when the pain relief would wear off. I would monitor her for now, and if she's still like this in the morning, I would take her into the vet for an exam.

Another possibility is that he could still be in pain or perhaps there was further injury that you are unable to see from the outside. This could be a side effect of the morphine administered for sedation. Keep her in a quiet, warm, dimly lit room. Restrict activity as much as possible, especially avoiding stairs or climbing onto furniture. Effects can last 4 to 6 hours, not all dogs metabolize the drug at the same rate so this period could be longer or shorter. If she is the same or worse after the 4-6 hour period has passed, consider having her rechecked by your vet. Contact your veterinarian anyway and discuss options for pain management once the morphine wears off.

Hi, sorry to hear about Daisy's troubles! Pyometra surgery in most cases is relatively uncomplicated. She should be on pain medication and antibiotics that your vet would have provided. many pain medications for dogs can make them sleepy. 60 hours post of she should be starting to feel back to herself within another day. If she is still lethargic and is having any problems like not eating diarrhea, a fever or acting dull, she should be rechecked by your vet. If she is not having any of these, she may just have hard a tough time with anesthesia. I would say by day 3 or 4 if she is not back to herself, call you vet and ask if it could be related to any medication she was sent home with. It can definitely be normal for dogs to be quieter than usual for a few days after a surgical procedure. Moki is probably somewhat sore, and may still be getting some of the anesthesia drugs out of his system. As long as he's eating and drinking normally and still gets excited about the things he normally would, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Most dogs are back to normal by 7-10 days after surgery.
