My dog was bit, on pain meds. Is he lethargic and weak from shock?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 4 months old

Hi, My dog got bit by another dog whilst out at the park yesterday. I took him to the vets and he was bleeding a lot from his ear from a cut. we managed to stop the bleed eventually and now he has a bandage on for a few days and is on medication for the pain. Last night he just slept deeply and I though that was due to the medication and today he will just stand there spaced out and wont go to the toilet. He seems quite weak on his legs also but he is drinking and eating. could he be in shock?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is unlikely due to him being in shock. This could be due to the pain control medications which usually have a sedative effect. Another possibility is that he could still be in pain or perhaps there was further injury that you are unable to see from the outside. If this continues, reevaluation by your veterinarian would be warranted. Good luck and have a great day!

It is impossible for us to predict if this is a normal response to a sedative / pain medication, progression of the condition or a different issue entirely without knowing exactly how much and what type of injectable pain relief he was given. My dog was attacked. Why is she now lethargic, shivering, not eating?

You should get your dog to a vet immediately for a thorough examination as there may have been some serious damage done that is not obvious. Hopefully not and it is just the development of some muscle pain etc but at the very least the vet will be able to give some pain relief, alongside peace of mind.

This should subside within 1-2 days. If it does not improve or it worsens, have Boomer evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No, I wouldn’t be concerned about the extra phenobarbital. It could cause minor sedation. If he is very lethargic it is unrelated to the medication. I would encourage a vet exam for the foot injury if he is worsening. Have a great day!

My active dog is drowsy after a long hike. Is it pain or vet time?

If lethargy is the only sign you are seeing at the moment, I would continue to monitor him for now as this could be just a transient thing due to discomfort from a long hike for example, among other possibilities.
