My dog puts her paws on my arm when I pet her. Why does she do that?

So I think it means he is bonded to you and wants to be near you when asleep which is when an animal is most vulnerable. Safety in numbers. But overall I think it means that he loves you! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In most cases this is a sign of excitement or affection- especially if this has been acceptable behavior so far. However, even signs of happiness can hurt a little when given by such a large dog and I recommend teaching her not to jump up. (This is especially important if there are children or elderly people in the house who may be easily knocked over by her enthusiasm). Best wishes to you and Charlie!

Mya has likely learned that this behavior gets your attention and that the feed back is positive (like she's playing a game she enjoys with you). There are things you can do to deter him from this behavior such as bitter apple spray and apply it to the area on your body that he licks the most. I would also consider using a spray bottle filled with water and when he does this behavior, spray him in the face and say "off!". These two techniques worked well for my dog when he was exhibiting the exact same problems and has worked well for other clients of mine that I have recommended these techniques to. Some puppies do this as a self-soothing behavior, similar to the way a human child might suck on his thumb or a pacifier. It's usually a harmless quirk that often goes away with age, although some dogs continue to do it as adults. It shouldn't be anything to worry about :)

It is not unusual for cats to have their own behaviors to show affection or that they would like affection. Be careful about let him always up high as this can be a sign of dominance and he needs to know you are still in charge. When he taps you after you stop, he is likely trying to tell you to continue petting him

It may be playful behavior, but it can also be due to stress, boredom or dominance. When she does it, offer a stern "No" and gently push her off your arm. Praise and reward her if she complies. If she persists, get up and move or place her in a separate room until she settles down. Be consistent.
